Two Tone Paint Opinions

I am painting my truck two tone blue and white. I am trying to figure out how far into the cab to bring the white. The natural point seems to be right in the corner of the post, like the picture, but I worry that with the door shut you will see blue through the gaps of the door. Should I take it to the outside arrows like the photo or bring the white into the inside arrows. One draw back to bringing the white into the inside arrows is that with the door open there would be a white horizontal section by that back door bumper. Has anyone ever noticed that you can see the body color through the door gaps on a two tone? Opinions would be helpful. Thanks.

Re: Two Tone Paint Opinions

A few years back I had a 89 Jimmy S15. Loved that truck. LOL. I had it 2 toned blue and white. Yes you can see the color through the gaps. Depending on the shades it can be more or less noticeable. If it is a dark blue it can look just like a shadow, but if it is a lighter blue it is very noticeable. In your case, with the orange, you will definitely see it through the gap

If your budget allows, I would take the color all the way to the inner lip of the door frame.

Re: Two Tone Paint Opinions

Chris is correct. Neither of the arrow sets in your first post would be correct.
So, the white should extend all the way into the line of the door seal - the other side of the seal should be the interior color, fawn.

The red one is not painted correctly. But also note, it makes sense because the doors are not painted correctly either... Where

Oops ! Posted before I finished.... Anyhoo - what I mean is this - his doors are red all the way up it appears - and that is not the factory scheme. Attached some pics - hope this helps.

Re: Two Tone Paint Opinions

Jocko, thanks for the pics, it is helpful. I am intending to put the blue on the inside of the cab as well, so I am looking for what would be best for that situation, not necessarily factory. Perhaps wrap the white in on the cab to the seal like you have and on the doors keep it blue where you have the fawn? On the doors, does the white wrap in as far as the door skin is welded? So all factory two tones took the white in to the seal?

Re: Two Tone Paint Opinions

yes, I believe all factory 2-tones were to the seal.

As for how far around the door edge the color went before it hit fawn, mine only goes JUST past the visible edge - maybe 1/32-1/16 around it, tops. Does not go all the way to the door skin edge. Makes sense, that way only exterior color is visible from the outside (with door closed) and, conversely, only interior color (fawn, or in your case blue) is visible on the inside (with the door closed - and you were looking up thru the crack real hard!). But - even if you did wrap it all the way around to where the door skin is welded, it probably wouldn't matter when looking from the inside, and might actually look more "professional" since you're doing a custom color anyway.

Nice color btw, can't wait to see the finished product - will look incredible with a white top.

Edit: and btw, yes, I agree - best approach would be to take the white in to the seal - and then put your blue where my fawn is. But fawn would look killer with your dark blue and white top.... I'm just thinkin out loud here.... Can you tell I like factory interiors.... Whatever you do will look great.

Re: Two Tone Paint Opinions

Thanks for your help. As for the color, I am hoping that the bright blue is not going to be too stark a contrast for the white. The white is going to be a pearl from Lexus, and may be brighter in person than the section of picture I put on the inner fender here.

Re: Two Tone Paint Opinions

that will look great - I was going to ask if perhaps you were planning on a pearl white. Assume you're gonna do the side painted insert as well or just white top?

Re: Two Tone Paint Opinions

I've got the side trim and will paint white in between the pieces down the side. Other than wheels, static drop, drive train, blue interior, and minor things such as hidden tailgate latches, it will be the stock two tone paint scheme with a big window, and custom trim. Got a NOS aluminum grille for it as well.
