Craigslist made me do it! 72 C30 & C40

Craigslist can make you do bad things. I just picked both of these up over the last few weeks. The C40 was a local buy. It is a 72 with 33K original miles. The 350 engine has factory PS and the truck has been ungraded to 22.5 wheels.
The Tow Truck is a 72 that I aquired thru an estate sale. The owner who passed away had owned it since 1975. The truck has 54k original miles. I picked it up from the service stataion where it spent almost it's whole life. I met an employee there when I picked up the truck that was also a good friend of the owner. He said the truck was rarely used. When I got there the truck fired right up and I was able to load it on the trailer quickly. I wanted to take pictures of where I got it, but it was pouring down raining. It was a long wet trip. 600 miles of driving in non stop rain and it took 19 hours. The last 4 hours of the trip were spent waiting to cross the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel. They wouldn't let anyone across with a trailer due to wind restriction.
Everyone wants to know what the plans are. Well I may sell the C40 even though I would love to drive it. The Tow Truck is what I have been looking for over the last 5 years. I used to own a 67 Tow Truck about 18 years ago. I always regretted getting rid of it and said it if I found the right one I would buy it. Well I could never find the right 67, but I like how original the 72 is and that it spent almost it's whole life at one shop. My plans are to restore the 72 to it's original glory and show it off.

That's a real nice tow truck. Looks like you have lots of fun in store as you get into it.

I really like that C/40. I like the tow truck, too. Just less common to see a decent C/40. I could use one of those.

Re: Craigslist made me do it! 72 C30 & C40

I have big plans for a C40 -50 or 60. I had one spotted right down the road from me just never did make it mine and this last week I went to look for it and it is gone. I have had a 64 C60 given to me by my bro in law and they[his family ]bought it new and put it on the farm they had. It is running driving with no rust and 29,000 mi. It is just the wrong year for what I want to do. My pans for the right one once I get it include a 454 t400 tilt buckets maybe a few other things like disc brakes. I have bought a 30,000 mile mtor home to get the stuff from it. I have big plans for the big truck most of the parts just now need the truck

The tow truck is cool but the c/40 rocks, that thing is sweet. Did they both come from PA?

I would love to have that C40. Put a flatbed/wedgebed on it and haul other stuff.

Great finds and buys. You mentioned you are probably going to restore the tow truck and that is great idea. If the tow truck was mine and I was restoring it, I'd repaint the truck the original blue and do whatever I had to do to leave the lettering on the door exactly like it is.

If I keep it I would like to put a wrecker bed on it or maybe a 10' dually bed. The wheelbase is to short for a wedge bed.

The C40 was a local buy about 10 miles away right here in VA.

Re: Craigslist made me do it! 72 C30 & C40

If I had that C/40 I'd be tempted to put a Reading utility bed or contractor dump on it and give it a life as an easy use pride "n" joy work truck. Another option would be like you say,a tow body. That's what I want to replace my C/30 wrecker once I sell it. Since I deal with light trucks,I want a tow truck one notch bigger. I'm in the ATHS and want a working truck to take to the couple few shows I attend a year. Pickups are cool, but it's more about real trucks there.
