Craigslist made me do it also!!!

I got this Custom 10 for parts but i think is in better conditions than mine. Its hard to find a good parts truck here in south texas because of the humidity here next to the gulf. I got it from craigs last week for 1000 i dont know if its to much for a parts truck but i have decided to used for some time it only needs the back up lights. The engine is in very good conditions does not smoke but i dont know what engine it is only that its a sbc. It has front disk brakes and its a 3 speed trans. But i do have some questions wen i press the gas it wants to turn off but then it revs up when in neutral and all gears? also what engine will that be is has on the pass side next to the head F05I7? The oil filter is longer than the long bed it has, i have never seen a filter that long. it has a 2bbl carb with the chevy logo on it, i have the intake and cab to make it into a 4 bbl but i want to keepit the way it is. and i also think it has points. I was impressed everything works on the truck. It does have rust but not as much as mine. Any help plz.

That looks like a pretty decent truck. I think you did OK on the price.

I'm wondering if the accelerator pump in your carb is not working. That will make it fall on it's face when you push the gas pedal down, especially when the engine is cold.

Maybe some of the other members will have some more ideas...

Re: Craigslist made me do it also!!!

Looks like an older engine with the canister type oil filter.
I bet it's actually a 283 or 327.
Check the numbers on the front of the block.

Re: Craigslist made me do it also!!!

Well I bought it as a 307 or a 350 according to the PO which he had seen this truck 2 times.
are parts like spark plugs, distributor, oil filter, etc the same for all SBC

Re: Craigslist made me do it also!!!

if it's a 307 or 350, someone went to a lot of odd work to make it look a lot like a 327/283 with older tech on it. Odds are seller didn't know what he had.

If you could post the number on the front passenger side block pad (just in front of the head/block mating point) it could be decoded quickly. While it is possible someone stuck old valve covers, old intake manifold, etc on the truck, it's very unlikely they would have put the cansiter oil filter - so probably is a 283/327, but can't confirm w/o some #'s.

Nice truck by the way, it's certainly no parts truck.

Re: Craigslist made me do it also!!!

Get the numbers off of the pad in the front of the passenger side cylinder head and post them here. They are stamped on the pad from the factory. Then we can tell you what engine it is without a doubt.

Re: Craigslist made me do it also!!!

My guess is that it is a mid 60's 283. That long filter canister was a big truck item in thole years.

Check the block casting number on the block at the back of the engine on the driver side.
The casting number will be in this location

This is a 350 casting number so it won't be the same on yours. The easy way to check it is to hold your digital camera by the firewall pointing down at that area and take a few photos so you can read the number. Then go to one of the sites that lists casting numbers for small blocks. This is one of the lists that most guys use http://www.nastyz28.com/sbchevy/sblock.php

If the engine runs good and is a 283 or better yet 327 all isn't lost as those engines are pretty popular with the traditional hot rod guys who are hunting small journal engines to use.

Re: Craigslist made me do it also!!!

The truck looks pretty good for just a parts truck.

Judging by the air cleaner I am fairly certain it is a 1967 or 1968 327. Also judging by how the alternator mounts to the exhaust manifold (i.e. no accesory bolts holes in the head.) The canister type of oil filter was also found on the 283 and 327 motors for 1968 and earlier.

You are correct that the distributor is a points type.

If the motor isn't too tired it should be a peppy little motor. I am jealous, I have been wanting to put another 327 back into my truck.

Good luck with the build.

I like how the PO used a window crank for the door handle! Other than that you got a nice score! Joseph

Re: Craigslist made me do it also!!!

67 or earlier 283 or 327. 68 no longer had the intake oil fill and I believe that 68 was the first year of spin on filters.

68 (at least cars) has a crossover of part styles. It has a spin on oil filter and an intake filler neck. They also got large journal crankshafts. This engine appears to me to be 67 back. Need to get the casting number off the back to get a better idea. All the tin interchanges, but 67 was also the last year for the script valve covers. in 68 they all got PCV valves in the valve covers.

Re: Craigslist made me do it also!!!

I would change the fluids/filters,rebuild the carb and tune it up(maybe an HEI) and see how it runs. You might do a compression check if you don't wanna spend on it before you have an idea of what it is.Looks like a pretty clean truck.
