Re: 64 c10 help?
It depends on what kind of diff you have, but a standard 10 or 12 bolt rearend just requires pulling off the inspection cover (diff cover) and counting the teeth on both the ring gear and the pinion gear.
The covers don't always have a drain plug, so once you loosten those bolts, fluid spills out everywhere. Some of the gaskets for these covers may not be readily available, so I would get one in hand first before pulling it apart. And lastly, I'm not sure you can even see the pinion gears to count them without also pulling out the differential itself. Frankly, I personally wouldn't go down that path because it isn't really that useful of information to know exactly which gear ratio you have. The difference between a 3.42 and a 3.73 isn't enough to warrant all that extra work. Counting the revolutions of the driveshaft or tire will get you close enough. Good luck with whichever you decide to do. Bill

Re: 64 c10 help?
Put chalk marks on your drive shaft and tire and watch them closely. if the shaft turns like 4 1/2 times per one rotation of the tire as opposed to 3 3/4, then just maybe your gear ratio is part of the issue.
