Question Who Is Running A 350 RAMJET?

Do you have one or have you experienced one?
Likes, dislikes? Worth the money? How did the install go?

i don't know if it's worth it, but i dam sure want one. if you're gonna run a fuelie and must start from scratch, i think it is cost effective see'in that a efi system alone runs about 2500.00 and the entire pkg. runs about 4k. oh yea, i want one. now if i can just convince the wife that i need one.!?!?!?!??????:p

I dunno.. if I was gonna drop the money on an EFI engine, I think I'd go all the way and get the 502 Ramjet.

I put one in my 68 4x4. There are a few issues to resolve as you go along, but well worth it. I was going to build a motor and add the fuel injection, but for about the same $$$, I bought the RamJet. I bought mine two years ago, so I battled a few issues that now is offered as an after market part. Go for it!

Charlie, what were those issues? Does the block have a provision for the necessary ballstud required for a clutch z-bar? Thanks for any info.

Building a small, high rpm engine with the perfect bore, stroke and rod ratio is very impressive.

I can't answer about the bolt hole for the clutch z-bar. I will say that I have found a hole for everything I wanted to bolt on. I am running an automatic. As for other issues, it's been mostly conversion type problems. Fuel tank with a sending unit for a larger return vs fuel source, pulley system, fuel system fittings, etc. The literature that comes with the motor is not real clear either. It left me scratching my head more than once. Of course if I did this again, it would seem way to simple. GM now has answer for some of these questions. They sell a complete serpentine pulley system, air cleaner, fuel fittings, etc. It really should be as simple as connecting a few wires, and firing the bad boy up, if only the directions were clear. I should write a book on this now! Hope this helps, and feel free to ask any questions if you choose to install one of these motors.

I did find Burt Chevrolet (Denver) and Scoggin Dickeys to be helpful with some of my questions.

Im buying the RAMJET 350 CRATE in a couple days and will be putting it in a 86 GMC 4x4. What are some of the best peices of advice you can offer me regarding what you have learned. Just some facts about the truck:
- currently a 4 spd manual but hopefully ill be able to upgrade to a 5 speed if thats possible to mount up to this type of engine.
- currrently have a 3.4 v6 in the truck
- do i need an electronic fan for the new engine?
- what kind of fuel pump do i need, can i use the stock fuel pump i have? im assuming no
- does the engine just drop right in or did you have to modify the frame or engine mounts?
- GM recommends 92 octane gasoline, is that a requirement or can i use 87 regular?
- Does have a good tune stock? i plan to put a true dual exhaust on it.
- Hows the mpg?

Re: Who Is Running A 350 RAMJET?

I don't have the ram-jet 350 from GM Performance Parts, but I did get a 350/330 HP Deluxe. I have yet to start it.

The best advise I can give regarding the multitude of questions you'll have is to call the GMPP tech line. They have extremely knowledgeable and helpful employees. The first thing they'll do is assign a case number so on future calls all you have to do is give them your case number, and they have all your information at their fingertips. I asked most of the questions that are asked in the above posts during my first call and got GM part numbers for the things I'd need, advise on installation and suggestions on the things GM couldn't supply such as a kickdown switch for my TH400. I've probably called 5 times and they are still very patient with my dumb questions! I feel it has been the best customer service I've ever received for ANYTHING I've ever purchased.

Here's a link to the GMPP installation guide that will be with the engine and will also provide some answers.

The number is for the "Power Train and Performance Parts Contact Center". They will ask you to select Chrysler, Ford or General Motors. I don't recall where I got the number, but it was before I bought the engine so it had to be either the GMPP catalog or their website. The toll free number is: 866-637-2787.

There are also numerous helpful FAQs on the GMPP website (www.gmperformanceparts.com).

Re: Who Is Running A 350 RAMJET?

I have 1200 miles on the Ramjet dropped into my 71. I had a mechanic drop it in, just a young kid and he had absolutely no problems. The HEI and stock tach don't work together (sometimes happens ramjet or no)
The power is satisfactory, the sound is perfect, the look is sweet.
Driveability is fantastic!
Turn it over till the fuel pump primes, it starts before the engines halfway turned over. I can then drop it into gear and back it out of the garage the second after it starts, no warm up. It runs like an absolute dream, I will never go back to a carb engine.
Plug it in and read all the info on your laptop, even buy tuning software to change the program (you can't tune a ramjet otherwise) I haven't gotten around to installing my software yet since I have a Mac ( not as happy with that decision) but I've really had no need to except for curiosity.
I've have no problems with the MEFI 4 at all.
There are a lot of sensors which require some artistry to sort away in the engine bay and still look good. Street and performance has tons of dress up gear for the Ramjet if you feel like you still haven't spent enough money.
I'll try and post some pics later.

Would you recommend those is there a different brand that might be better? The only thing im really concerned about is the manifolds hitting the frame, because Im strongly against cutting the frame.

I've never heard of anyone having trouble with the Sandersons which ECE sells for 71's but I can't speak for your model. Plenty of room on mine though. They are a highly regarded header manufacturer, price is on the high side.

What kind of fuel pump setup did you use for your swap? I have an 86 so mine will be a bit different but do you know if there is an electronic fuel pump that is a direct fit into the stock fuel tanks for these trucks or did you have to go the external fuel pump route. This is my first time doing this so im just looking for the easiest option. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks, Jerry.
