mufflers on dump valves or do you like it loud?

Just curious what the majority does? I dont have mufflers on mine now but i just finished my bags. At first i thought the noise was cool but im starting to think its a little too "look at me" haha

I kind of have the same thought process as I do. The "look at me" factor of the loud dumps just isn't me. But then again I don't have bags.

Adam if you have young kids or dogs near your truck when you need to air out mufflers might be a nice option. My dog used to like riding with me till I hit the switches with him beside it one day. Now he doesn't like coming in the garage if I am near that truck.

Re: mufflers on dump valves or do you like it loud?

There are two types of mufflers that can be used. The long cone shaped brass one is known as a "muffler" by industry terms. There is also one that is flat across the top and has the same honeycomb finish, and is known as a "breather".

The cone muffler will reduce the noise by about 50% and will not effect drop speed. Great for knocking the edge off the dump valve noise but will not have any effect on dump valve performance.

The breather one will reduce the noise by about 90% and reduce the drop speed by 50%. Perfect for those looking to seriously reduce the noise coming from the dump valves along with slowing the vehicle down. Works great on vehicle that have 3/8 or 1/2 system but don't want the vehicle to drop drastically. Also great for body dropped vehicles that want a classy smooth and quiet dropping.

Re: mufflers on dump valves or do you like it loud?

There is also a third option. I'm not sure who makes them or where we get them, but we use these at work on about 90% of our pneumatic equipment. They quiet things down quite a bit and you can regulate the speed at which it will dump out.

It looks like we get them through Grainger.com. They are Speedaire brand and they are called a speed control muffler. I'm not sure how well they would work, but it might be worth a shot.

I'm running 1/2 inch valves, and have those in my dump valves. I got them from a buddy that does maintenance at a factory, so I can't say where you can buy them. They work great, they quiet them down quite a bit, and made it drop nice and smooth. Also they allowed me to level out the front and back drop so it comes down at the same rate. I love them, and don't know why i didn't put them on sooner. I can't explain it, but it seemed to make my bagged truck "Classier", if thats even possible haha

Theres a video of me laying it out, its at the very end of some show footage from the ///RA Allstar Event last year in Millington, TN. It was shot by the guys at SoLoFilms DVD and KP Concepts. Heres a to the trailer. Mine is the blue/silver 67 at the end. Maybe that will give you an idea of what they do.

Re: mufflers on dump valves or do you like it loud?

The adjustable slow downs are nice if you have individual valves. I know that AVS sells them and you can look for Jason@AVS on here, or check under Vendors or Suspension Market for their company.

@ Stealthy 69 .... Even with the Accuair valves, you could run an external muffler aside from the one they offer. All you need to do is run some of the leftover airline out of the valve manifold and into a female NPT fitting with the muffler screwed into the other side. I can tell you from experience though, the Accuair manifold wont be too loud or ultra responsice when compared to individual valves. You can always try running some extra line out of the valve dump ports as well to just reduce the noise and not install a muffler.

Re: mufflers on dump valves or do you like it loud?

Thanks for posting this thread! Just got off the phone with Jason and ordered 4 of the 1/2" adjustable ones. Pulling the valves out of the box I made and putting them under the tub made a HUGE difference in the sound and it's crazy loud. It'll be nice to slow down this 1/2" line to a non-back breaking pace too.

Re: mufflers on dump valves or do you like it loud?

I use the adjustable style as well. I like to be able to dump all four valvles at once and have the truck drop slowly.

Colin, my truck moves at that speed, and is about that sound level. I thought you guys meant louder than that.
