Frame-chassis s/n???

Can anybody tell me where the s/n is on the frame on my 87 4x4? its a 2500 pick up if that makes a difference.thanx

I don't know about the 87, but my 83 C20 has an i.d. mark on the right (passenger side) frame rail on top, about the midway mark of the fuel tank.

Should be the same on an '87.

It will probably vary slightly based on assembly plant, but should be pretty close.

That is a rubber bumper I had to install on both frame rails to cushion the drop of the dump box conversion. The "professional" installers did not install them when the conversion was done, so the box dropped with a big bang no matter how gently I let the box down. I am on my second set, going for a third set, due to desert heat helping to squash them down. The trim line of the box sets up a little bit in front because of the extra height the bumpers provide, but nobody notices it on my beater truck.

Except for 73-75(?)'s where one number was on the driver's frame rail around the steering box area. Later ones had 2 numbers, one under the car and one under the bed, both passenger frame rail, within 12" of each other or so...

That's the one thing I wish I remembered better.

I didn't start as the supervisor of that area (at Flint Assembly) until June of 1979, and I just don't remember that clearly which side, and how many times we hit the frame rail. I'm also thinking we had two presses hanging there: one for Chevrolet and a different one for GMC (because the VIN sequence was different - Chevy started with 100001 and GMC with 500001).

Your answer is ringing a bell with me, but after 33 years it's all kind of foggy....

Here is a couple pictures from a 1987 T10 GMC (same as C10 Chevy) that I have used for parts. Basicly its an 87, GMC, 4x2, reg cab, longbed truck.

The first picture is the passenger frame rail, just between were the cab and bed meet. You can note the rear pass cab mount, where the fuel tank would mount, where the front bed bolt is, and where both frame numbers are, as highlighted in the picture.

The second picture is of the front frame number, highlighted by it self.

The third picture is where the rear frame number is, highlighted by it self. You should be able to also notice the front bed bolt hole...

All 76-91 numbers will be basicly in the same spots, unless it is a new replacement frame from the factory. Keith migh be able to tell us how replacement frames were marked... I personally never had one apart that had been replaced with a new one... If it is a used replacment frame, then it will have the old truck numbers on it.

73-75 numbers are in 2 diff places. The first is on the drivers frame rail, next to the steering box. Sorry I do not currently have a 73-75 in stock to take a pic of, but if you can find your steering box, the number will be right there... I believe (believe is the key word) that 73-75's had the other number on the passenger rail as located in pic 3.
