Re: Building my shop soon.

Looks like a good plan, If it were me though. I would move the lift over to be in front of the other door. reason Gives you more room in front of the bench. For when you have a motor torn apart or something with alot of parts.

Re: Building my shop soon.

I would move the doors over a little farther. And leave some space between them. So if you have two vehicles you can really open the doors.

Re: Building my shop soon.

Great size and plan:
I've found you can never have the doors too wide or high. Most of all the overhead.

I've froze my rear off 6" from a warm heater, because I had something 6" too high to clear the overhead.

i would go about 2 ft higher to 14 ft with the lift it comes close with a truck with a camper shell on the lift . put work bench at the back of the shop helps with room .

My first thought was this what fine 69 says,, it's hard to move a car over once in the shop due to the sharp turning.. lots of going forward and backing up..

nice size shop and I like the room you have ( 7 ') from car to work bench,,I realize you lose some with the car door open but ,,to get more room for that you'd have to build a bigger shop..and that cost more $$ and more room on property to do so.. JMO thought as I see it ..

Re: Building my shop soon.

That's going to be one nice shop. I agree with the others about the doors needing more separation. Moving the 1st one further to the left will make things easier with 2 vehicles in at the same time. No matter how you go about doing it, it sure beats my dinky 1 car garage.

Re: Building my shop soon.

I want the door next to the bench to stay, beings that its a wooden shop I got to make sure he can move the doors over. the posts are on 10ft centers but im not sure if he can put a header in to move them to where I want them, 5ft between the doors. The two post lift in my buddies shop is just shy of 11ft tall across the top brace, cant raise anything higher than the safety stop anyway. If i moved the lift over to the other door and had something parked in there I would have to walk around it to get to the bench, which is why I like it there. The bench across the back would work ok but it quickly takes up alot of room when its only going to be 30ft deep.
Keep the suggestions coming in though, I know there are some good ideas that im overlooking for the rest of the layout.

Re: Building my shop soon.

12 foot wall is nice, what is the pitch of the roof? put some good fans in the ends to help with air movement. Ditto on the overhead doors. Your builder should be able to move the doors around where you need them even with a pole barn.

3 foot deep workbench will be nice.

Re: Building my shop soon.

how about this, instead of using your standard A framed roof truss. Use scissor trusses over the span where your lift shall be. You'll gain some height (depending on roof pitch) so you have the option to go higher with a lift. without raising your walls higher.

Re: Building my shop soon.

On your sketch, the bottom left side, straight across from the man door,at the very back, put another roll up door even if it's a small one. When it's warm it will help with airflow thru the shop. That will help keep it cooler and less smoky when welding or running an engine.Put a small lean-to with a pad for the Air Compressor. If you use the scizzors truss, put in skylights, since you wont have loft storage. If you can run water do.You can use a utility sink for both parts cleaning and Jon cleaning(keeps momma happier if you don't drag grease etc into the house),a half bath is even nicer.Wire a seperate main elect box for the shop.

Just things I would try to do if I build.

Re: Building my shop soon.

That is the same size as mine. I put the doors 8 ft from each side with 4 ft between them. That lets me park a truck against the wall and still pull in another through the open door. I thought the 10x10 doors where great till I bought a toy hauler that is 10' 6" to the top of the air conditioner. Oh well there is always too much stuff in there to put it in any way. I have plans for a lift also but still have not done it. I am now leaning to a 4 post lift with wheels so I can move it from side to side.

Re: Building my shop soon.

The one thing that I would make sure to do if I was you is to try and figure out where you would like to put overhead shelves. Then install plenty of backing in the walls. We all tend to overload whatever shelving we put up!

Re: Building my shop soon.

Like a few others have mentioned frame now for as large of a door as you can. I just built a 30x40 with 2 10' tall 12' wide doors. Even if just one of the doors is wider it wil look fine and allow one bay to be more user friendly. I can tell you one dually fender more than pays for the increased header size cost needed to span 2' extra.
