fan hitting shroud
I had a shop transplant my 283 for a 350. When I picked up the truck they said they had trouble with the fan hitting the shroud and had to "adjust it". When I drove it home the fan hits the shroud on R turns. I checked the clearances and there is about an inch on the L (drivers) side, and an eighth on the R side. I will be taking it back to the shop on Tues. morning. The mounts look good but has anyone had a similar experience?
Thanks in advance, Brett |

Re: fan hitting shroud
Can the radiator be shifted side to side to even up the clearance?

Re: fan hitting shroud
same issue here. fan hits shroud on right turns. maybe installing a battery hold down or modifying the battery tray will help. i look forward for some more insight on this too. i have a 350 in mine

Re: fan hitting shroud
I had a fan to shroud issue once before. It was with a small block with a long water pump. I just changed to a short water pump like these trucks came with originally. No more fan to shroud issue.
Are the motor mounts the original style? Is the trans in the original location?

Re: fan hitting shroud
Everything from the 283 went on the 350, including the powerglide and motor mounts. Are the mounts L and R? I measured and the block is sitting more towards the R inner fender than the L inner fender by 3/4". I know the answer is going to be simple when we finally correct it.

Re: fan hitting shroud
Make sure your rad support mounts are in good shape. My passenger side was collapsed and had to jack it up and re-weld it into the correct place. My shroud was not hitting, but my whole front was out of shape because of that.
Just a thought.

Re: fan hitting shroud
The motor mounts themselves are the same for L or R. The motor mount brackets between the frame and crossmember are L & R specific. When you say the engine is more towards the right by 3/4", is that the difference in the measurement on the left versus the right? Or is the left versus right measurement different by 1-1/2"? If this issue did not exist before the engine change, I would start looking at what was replaced or changed, one thing at a time.

Re: fan hitting shroud
The truck was 100% factory with the 283. The mechanic phoned and asked if he could put a smaller blade on; I said "It's been fine for 47 years""Solve the problem; not the symptom" I told him to change the motor mounts first; the 283 was leaking and burning oil and maybe the rubber in the mounts had deteriorated. These mounts must have had problems from day one for GM to issue a hold down cable for the engine.(yes, that is still in place). We'll see what happens when the new mounts are installed.
