Advise for you on ordering windshields
I tried to order a front glass from Classic Parts last Thursday. The price is a couple hundred bucks from them or LMC but I found that using "stovebolt" as a discount code gets you 10%off from classic so I thought what the heck and ordered. They waited until today (6 days later) to call and inform me that shipping it would be another $150 and sorry but our online ordering just doesn't calculate oversize shipping. Too bad, Summit and everyone else does so I say poo on you, cancel the order.
Here's the point of this story...I called my local glass shop and they said they can have a new windshield today for $120. Not only is it 80 bucks cheaper but no shipping. I'm just saying if you're thinking of ordering glass call around local and see if you can get a better deal. I'm saving $230 today!

Re: Advise for you on ordering windshields
Shipping really seems to kill the "value" of getting a windshield from anyone but a local vendor.

Re: Advise for you on ordering windshields
I have heard some of the replacement windshields are not as thick, which affects the sealing and trim. Any one else heard or had issues with this??

I was also surprised to find that 2 local companies had them. although they get $220 for them around here, it was nice that it is locally available.
I cannot see paying 150 in shipping.

Re: Advise for you on ordering windshields
Yes, I have seen the proof. The windshield I bought for my 56 is thicker than the one my buddy bought from a different supplier. I would also caution those who are looking for a cheap windshield (curved) that some of the cheaper ones are VERY difficult to see through at the curve area. The one my buddy bought is nearly impossible to see through at the curve (very distorted view). Mine is a bit distorted, but not anywhere near as bad as his. They are probably both made by the C.H. Ina Company.

Re: Advise for you on ordering windshields
I REALLY need a new windshield. Mine is so pitted it looks like it was lightly sandblasted!
I don't know where I'm gonna get mine but I do know I intend to buy Steele Rubber to have a shop put it in with. |

Re: Advise for you on ordering windshields
go for it, money saved is money saved.
but i've found out when dealing with the local guys, they give you a standard price. when you go in to order it they say ''a 1958? no can do'' i had a local guy come out to install mine, that's what i heard when they got there.

Re: Advise for you on ordering windshields
I recently bout one for $125. It was made in mexico, thin and busted before I got it in. Dug through my pile of used originals, found the best one and it went in just fine. The original weighed three times what the mexico one did. Thats the first windshield I had broken on an install. Probably installed al least 30 windhield onver the years. I think maybe ppg glass still make one in the US. Next time I will pay the extra bucks.
