Odd question....

I just bought a 68 long bed and i pulled the tranny today and noticed a tag on the left side that says ct-68-18133 and above that it says 299. I know its a 400 turbo but does the 68 stand for the year?

Re: Odd question....

Apparently so. Here's the one on my 69. It's on the right/passenger side though.

Re: Odd question....

299 = julian build date, about October 6th, 1968
ct-68-18133 Chevrolet truck 1968 s/n 18133

BTW Does your trans have a partial VIN stamped in either of these locations?

I will check. Does that make a difference?

I agree that the 299 on badpurple's truck and the 328 on mine are likely the Julian dates of manufacture. However, I know my 69 was built early in December of 1968 and that the trans is original. Therefore, the Julian date on mine must be 1968, and they must have indicated the model year of the truck on the tag rather than the build year of the trans. Since 1968 was a leap year, my trans would have been built Nov. 23 which is logical for my Dec. 1968 build date. Also, 266 was Oct. 26 in 1967 which was after the introduction of the 1968 models which is also logical for badpurple's truck.

I can check to see if there is a partial VIN on the driver side in about a week.

Good info!

Thank You for pointing out my error! You are correct in that the date is wrong. I should have written "299= julian build date, about October 25th,1967". The GM julian date coding centers on January 1st of the model year as 366. So a '68 model year trans, as we clearly have here, would backup the 67 days (366-299=67) to October 25,1967

The VIN coding would be nice to know if it is there. Not sure it adds any value but it would be nice to know you have the as built trans..

FirstOwner69, I concur with your date of November 23rd, 1968 on your trans. julian coded 326. 366-328=38 -31 days for Dec.=7 From the 30 days in Nov. -7=23rd.

Tim,
No partial VIN or anything else stamped on the transmission. Sorry it took so long to respond.
