292 carb issues

The other night I was coming home on the highway and the 292 was running fine when I pulled off on my exit. At the top of the off-ramp it stalled and would not restart. When I opened the hood it was gasapalooza with fuel dumping out of the carb. Got the wife to tow me home, and I pulled the carb. Suspected the float but it seemed light still with no apparent holes. Sprayed it out with carb cleaner and bolted it back on with the same result. Any advice on what I can check or clean in there that would cause the fuel to flow freely without stopping? I believe the carb is original and it is labeled as a Rochester monojet. Do I just get a rebuild kit?

Re: 292 carb issues

There is a problem with the float or the needle & seat. You probably have a piece of dirt in the N&S if the float is OK. Excess fuel pump pressure can cause this also but that is not likely to be the trouble. Those are pretty easy carbs to work on & you are already familiar with it. I would get a kit & new float & do an o-haul on it. You will be suprised how good it runs. Make sure the link from the throttle lever to the metering rod holder stays in the hole. Sometimes you have to bend it in a little to keep it from working out.

Thanks for that link SS Tim. Having the manual really helps me understand where all of the action is happening. I'll pull it apart again tonight and see if I can get it cleaned out.

Re: 292 carb issues

Got it fixed now. It turns out that the needle/seat assembly that the float pushes against had unscrewed itself nearly all the way out. This was pinning the front of the float to the bottom of the bowl. I had bought a rebuild kit so I replaced the needle and seat as well as the float bowl gasket.

Bolted the Rochester back on & it fired right up & no more fuel running over a hot exhaust manifold.

Thanks for the replies, they helped me figure it out.

Glad to hear it is worked out. Knew it had to be something simple, just sometimes the brain draws a blank.
