I have 3 on the tree, not sure wich 1; about 73k miles on it. There is some noise almost like a rattle when the truck idles, its out of gear and the clutch is not pressed. Any input on that would be appreciated, But the real question: every time I shift into 2nd I grind. Downshift or upshift; the only time it doesn't grind is if I am moving, I hold the clutch in and kinda let the tranny slip into 2nd. It seems to come to a point where the gear mate right up.
I'm thinking its the syncros, but I'm no tranny guy.

It's the 2nd gear synchronizers with your shifting problem. It slips in when the trans and engine speed are synchronized. The rattling is most likely worn mainshaft bearings. Your transmission is telling you it's tired. I might as well ask,how is the fluid level?

I went out to look at it yesterday; I found 1 square head bolt on the pass side of the tranny, but was unable to get it to spin. My fluid was replaced about 3 years ago when I had to pull the driveshaft and replace the carrier bearing. How important is it to replace the mainshaft bearing?

Well soaked the crap out of the tranny plug, got it off just fine and the fluid is nice and full. Looks like time for a rebuild. I've read it before, but can't find the post right now. how do I tell if its a saginaw or muncie? Anyone have any tips for the rebuild?

The Saginaw is cast iron case & the Muncie is aluminum. Get a good book & follow the instrucktions. Often you can find a good used one a lot cheaper & easier then rebuilding yours. Many have been replaced with 4, 5, speeds & autos.

Also important to use GL-4 rated gear oil for transmissions with these old brass synchros.

Gotta revive this thread; I had hopped to deal with the tranny this winter, but of course other things happened. well the weather is starting to break here and I'm wanting to drive her. Any input on how bad the tranny is and how urgent the repairs are? What about the mainshaft bearing mentioned above? Basically I'm wanting to know can I drive it, is it worth the risk or do I park her until I can fix her? thanks guys.

Have you tried to adjust the linkage? There is a great how to in the FAQ section on adjusting the linkage. It takes about 15 mins and well worth the effort.

I found that FAQ; I'm going to do that especially since there have been a few times that the linkage stuck on me.

Does anybody have any insight about the clutch linkage? I pulled out of the garage today and noticed the clutch linkage was loose. About 1/4 in of play before the lever would hit the arm in the tranny. I took it artist and tightened it so it was snug, but wondering how tight it should be. It seems if I push the clutch pedal some the vibration lessens. Thanks.
