72 big block a/c bracket question
Can a big block expert take a peek at the a/c brackets on this ochre truck for me? They do not look like the original brackets to me, however, am wondering if these are the correct brackets for a CA truck with a smog pump perhaps? (the ochre truck is a Fremont truck, but has always been registered in NV its whole life). For comparison, I posted a pic of sameyrasmea's awesome original big block - his a/c brackets are what I remember on prior trucks as exactly correct, but the ones on the ochre truck seem a little odd/different to me. (sameyrasmea, hope you don't mind if I posted your engine pic - it's quite a useful reference for me)
The main question is the orange bracket on the ochre truck that is over the forward passenger side intake manifold bolts - looks kinda like something is missing or maybe not... Does the smog pump mount that high on these things? Looks like some sort of pump/device could be mounted in there. Would LOVE to see a big block pic with a smog pump for comparison. Thanks for the help. |

Re: 72 big block a/c bracket question
ok, found my answer. It's what I was afraid of.... Yes, it's the smog pump mount. My Lord that is one ugly hunk o crap right on top of the engine....
Ok, this begs the next big question for some of you native Californians... Is a 72 vehicle subject to smog check (I think the answer is no), BUT, if the vehicle originally had a smog pump, is it required to retain it? And how would/could this be caught? The ochre truck clearly had one - and the build sheet calls it out as well. But if the brackets were changed to the 49 state a/c brackets, is there any way to know it would have been a smog engine?? Bottom line - do I need to locate a smog pump to register this thing in CA? My goodness that is hideous. |

Re: 72 big block a/c bracket question
Jocko, thanks for posting the picture of the BBC smog pump. It is the first one that I have seen!
Good luck on removing it. Jim

Re: 72 big block a/c bracket question
In California 1972 vehicles are not reqired to be smogged. However CHP can pull you over and if you are in a area of Calif. that requires smog (some remote areas are excempt) a CHP officer (only CHP) can ask to check your smog devices (if he has reasonable suspension). Calif. rules say you are not allowed to remove or alter any smog related device.
Yes I have been harassed on this in the passed on my 71. A CHP did want to tag me for an improper Air Cleaner assy. Most CHP's don't care. But there are some that...well??? |

Re: 72 big block a/c bracket question
you dont have to have a anything pre 76 smogged in CA.
Didnt know about CHP having one more way to harrass you. Why do I live in this state again? |

Re: 72 big block a/c bracket question
You do not have to smog this truck, period. You have absolutely nothing to worry about.
