widest rear rims/tires with a stock stepside fender..ideas/pics?

I've decided not to mini-tub Project Daisycutter, but would like to get some ideas/pics from other stepside owners of how to cram as much meat under those stepside fenders as possible.
Anybody roll the fender lips in for an extra inch of clearance?
What size rims, backspacing are you guys running?
Thanks for the help, SC

Here is a picture of my stepside with 15x10 rims in the rear. I have 275/60/15 tires without any clearance problems or having to roll my fenders.

superchevy -

255/45X20s on 20X8 rims, 4 1/2" backspace.
With this tire, I can tuck rim (wellll, real close). I have about 3/4" clearence to the bed side and 1/4" to the fender. With bags dumped and frame laying on the axle (about a 3" notch), I still have 1" space from tire to top of fender.
Yes, I pinched the fender just a little because when I only filled one rear air bag, it would catch on the other side. Now, no problems.

As chaptr2 shows, you can get a lot more tire under there if you stay stock or have a mild drop. Just depends where you're going with your project....

Thanks for the info guys.
I've got a 6" drop in the rear.
I'm wondering if I measure very carefully, roll the fender lips, and get a custom offset/backspacing combo, if I can squeeze a 12" wide rim under there?
We'll see. SC

Hey SCOTI. I'm going to keep the bed stock with a nice wood/stainless combo. Just hated to cut it up.
Are you going out to the Ballpark swapmeet this weekend?
Maybe I'll see you there.

Yep.... I'm going to try & make it. I also agree w/low84, 10" is max size w/o having to start cutting.

I don't have a step side bed but from what I've heard from people who have them, an 8" wide wheel is about all you can fit with a decent tire. Like Nosto stated he only has about 1" total clearance. That's a pretty tight fit!

superchevy, i'm running a 12" wheel in back, and will have to mini tub it. If the stock wheelwells were about 1" wider it would have made it.

Just noticed you've got a step bed. Not sure about the clearance there, i would have to say the same or maybe even a little less!

I'm not afraid to cut it, it just opens a can of worms if you do - cutting the bedsides, trimming the bedsills, trimming the wood and bedstrips to fit, etc - for just a couple of more inches of tire. I think maybe it's better to either go for full tubs like ProStreet, or just maximize what you've got stock. I'm not building a ProStreet truck, so I'm just going to work with what I have and squeeze the largest possible sum'***** in that wheelwell.

chaptr2- Hope you don't mind me using this pic
I believe that you can use 12 inch rims with a 6 inch offset, but you'll have to get rid of these and you have to use mini tubs as well.

I've got 285/70R15's on 15x10 rims. I don't know the back spacing though. I wish I could find a ncie 295/60 somewhere without spending alot of money. I've got BFG Radial T/A's right now. And unfortunately, I don't have a good pic of the rear tires right now. But the 285/70's are about perfect size for my truck and stance. Plus I've about got the tired worn down to some nice street drags.

I am also curious about dropping the rear of my truck 3-4 inches and getting the widest tire possible to fit. ttt

BFgoodrich makes a 295/65R15 or a 315/60R15 in their Comp T/A Drag Radial tire. That's the only one I've found so far

Re: widest rear rims/tires with a stock stepside fender..ideas/pics?

The first thing you want to find out is the width of your rear axle housing.

67-68 housing is more narrow than the later housing by .75" on either side. If you are looking at custom backspacing on your wheels you definitely want to know this before you order. Ex. 5" BS on one truck doesn't mean it will fit the same on another. .75" is huge when you're trying to tuck 20's + under your truck, bagged, etc. It can be a costly mistake.

Re: widest rear rims/tires with a stock stepside fender..ideas/pics?

Wow, this is an old thread! Since it's here, though, 10" wide wheels is max with stock bedsides. I'm running a 17x9.5 wheel with 275/55/17 tires with a 5.75" rear drop. I currently have a 71-72 rear(wider) and the wheels have a 5.5" bs and they rubbed the inner bedside, so I have to run 7/16" spacers and they still slightly rub in hard cornering. So basically, with a 71-72 rearend, 5" backspacing is ideal.

I'm going to have to change my rear gear soon. I'm thinking of building a narrower 67-70 rearend and ordering new 17x9.5 rear wheels with the correct backspacing, which I have determined should be 4.25".

Some simple measurements that i used when adding tubs to my 67 stepside will help you work this out.
I started by removing the bump stops, then measured the distance from the wheel mounting surface to the frame and the distance from the frame to the inner flange on the fender. It also helps to know rhe distance from the bed si

lol 9 year old thread.....ehh why not. I'm running a similar setup to 68Stepbed. I'm running a 17x8 wheel also with 275/55/17 with a 6" rear drop on my stepside. I have the narrower '67 rear and my wheels have 4" bs with about an inch of clearance between rubber and inner bedside. Everything fits very nicely but I'm thinking about going with a wider wheel with the same bs as well as a wider tire because I could still come out a little more.
