exhaust pics

I need to get the exhaust done on my 65 and need some ideas on where it should exit. I'm going with dual exhaust.

Re: exhaust pics

true duals dumping out the side, no cross pipe, resonators only. Kind of a commitment since you have to cut sheetmetal.

Re: exhaust pics

Mine exit in front of the rear tires at a 45 degree angle, with 3 inch polished stainless steel tips. That in combination with the flowmaster, makes the engine sound bigger than the 230 that it is.

Actually, I plan on building my GTO exhaust to exit in front of the rear tires too.

Do you have interior resonance with the tailpipes cut at the rear axle?

Re: exhaust pics

I prefer out the sides behind the rear tires. I would never go straight out the back, why spend the money on the exhaust if you can't hear it? Love to hear the pipes echoing off the buildings as I cruise by!!!

What size of pipes are you getting?? What engine do you have??

I would recommend:
2" to 2-1/2" Diameter pipes with "vortec" glasspacks installed backwards.
If you look inside the glasspack and you can see little "scoops" that direct the exhaust through the fiberglass sound insulation, install so that the exhaust flows by the scoops instead of flowing through the glass.

My old engine, 305 with 283 heads, stock 350 cam and 4bbl Quadrajet would rap the pipes sooo sweet!! Sounded like a jake brake on a semi...

If you took off from a stop in 2nd, lay on the throttle and crack open the four barrel (took off the choke linkage off the top flaps and adjusted the spring so the b-flys would open easier) WITH THE AIR CLEANER FLIPPED UPSIDE DOWN OF COURSE!!! Get the RPMs up to about 5000 give or take. Then completely back off the throttle and let the 3.73 gears and engine slowing you down. Sounded awesome on a small town main street with buildings on both sides.

This practice was probably not the best for an engine, and more than likely the reason it spun a rod bearing... man it was fun though!!!

Cylinder Index
The Cylinder Index (or C.I.) is a measurement device in which the total number of internal combustion engine cylinders (working or non-working) owned by an individual (single-cylinder chainsaws, lawnmowers, 2-cycle, 4-cycle, multi-clinder diesels, trucks and farm tractors) are tallied. The Garage Logician who attains a C.I. in excess of his age is revered. - Joe Soucheray, Mayor of Garage Logic.

There is absolutely no droning in the cab on my truck. I think mainly because the exhaust hangs from the engine and the mufflers with nothing touching the frame anywhere near the cab. Also the crossover pipe on the new system cut the sound output by at least half. It was loud like a hot rod before (although still no cab resonance). Now it sounds like a 1960’s Corvette from the outside at idle and under acceleration. It still does produce an impressive exhaust note under wide open throttle however.

Much of the exhaust sound is also due to the mufflers themselves, which are Flowtech Terminators. Thy don’t seem to have a very popular following, but I’ve used them since the 1980’s and will never buy anything else unless they quit making them.
