Cut A New Mirror For The Inside Of The '70
-
I've been wanting to try this for quite a while. I have a lot of mirrors for our trucks but they all have the dredded hazy/crappy mirror syndrome. I had some free time today so I decided to bite the bullet. I had to break out the old glass so I wouldn't destroy the rubber surround, made a pattern, and cut a new mirror. I cleaned up the edges of the new mirror with my glass grinder (used for stained glass work) and checked it for size. I then took it out to the shop and set the heat gun up so I wouldn't have to hold it, and heated the rubber up as I peeled it around the outside of the mirror. It turned out great. The reflection is the ceiling in the laundry room... ![]() LockDoc

great job, the diy projects always rate high in satisfaction, don't forget to show some pics if the new "old" mirror installed.

Thanks guys. I couldn't wait until morning to install it... ![]() I have five of them to do for my trucks Keith so I don't think I will be selling them any time soon. First pic is the old one second is the new one. It's really hard to take pictures of a mirror, especially in the dark... LockDoc

Re: Cut A New Mirror For The Inside Of The '70
I haven't tried it yet but I don't think so. That would be the only downfall if a person actually used that function, I never use it anyway so it wouldn't make a difference to me.

Re: Cut A New Mirror For The Inside Of The '70
A prismatic rear-view mirror — sometimes called a "day/night mirror" — can be tilted to reduce the brightness and glare of lights, mostly for headlights shining directly on the eye level at night. This type of mirror is made of a piece of glass that is wedge-shaped in cross section—its front and rear surfaces are not parallel.
On manual tilt versions, a tab is used to adjust the mirror between "day" and "night" positions. In the day view position, the front surface is tilted and the reflective back side gives a strong reflection. When the mirror is moved to the night view position, its reflectorized rear surface is tilted out of line with the driver's view. This view is actually a reflection off the non-reflectorized front surface. Since the non-reflectorized front surface allows most of the light to go through, only a small amount of light is reflected into the driver's eyes From Wiki.

Re: Cut A New Mirror For The Inside Of The '70
Hey Leon, do you think it would be possible to remove and replace the glass without damaging the rubber surround? Maybe by heating up the rubber with a hairdryer or heat gun and using some sort of plastic tool to aid in removal? I see that there is a re-silvering kit available online. Unfortunately, I've only got my original mirror and I'm afraid to experiment on it without gathering some more info. Seems like the Corvette and Camaro guys have done this but I can't find any good instructions or pictures of the removal and re-installation process.

The rubber is also underneath the mirror and the mirror is glued or heat bonded to it. I have never been able to remove the original mirrors without breaking the glass but I can almost always save the rubber base. It takes quite a while because you have to chip the broken glass off of the rubber with a sharp putty knife or a small chisel....... I tried some solvent but that didn't work. I have never tried heat. I have a few extra mirrors so I guess I could try it. LockDoc -

Re: Cut A New Mirror For The Inside Of The '70
Great thread Doc!
Just so I understand your process, you cut a rectangular piece of mirror and then grind/polish it to size? That must take hours! And thanks to Farmall for the explanation of how the day/night mirror functions.

I made an exact pattern and I cut the mirror glass to the correct size, so it takes very little grinding/polishing, just enough to smooth the edges and take the sharp edges off of them. Picture of the mirror glass ready to cut and a mirror with the glass removed. LockDoc

Re: Cut A New Mirror For The Inside Of The '70
Do you have some kind of diamond jigsaw or band saw blade to cut curves like that?
Sorry for all the questions but I've never seen anyone cut a curves in glass before.

No problem on the questions. I just use a high quality standard glass cutter. The secret is in how you make the cuts. Cut all the way around the piece first. Then break the long side first to separate the one you are working on from the rest of the glass. Then make angled cuts out from the corners and tap the glass from underneath to finish separating the pieces. (see picture) I also have a pattern for the DG4 style exterior mirrors. LockDoc

Yes I do. I have been using mirror tile that came from Menards. It is a little thinner than some of the other mirrors so it fits in better and is easier to cut. LockDoc -
