Easiest power sterring conversion

Hi everybody! I've got a 63 1/2 ton that someone already put a 350 in to. Everything else is looks stock. My question is what kit out there could I install with minimal headaches. Keep in mind I'd rather save time than money. THANKS IN ADVANCE!

Re: Easiest power sterring conversion

Not knowing what the PO has done to your truck regarding the engine installation, I can not guarantee no headaches, but converting to power steering really isn't complicated. The one part that could be an issue, is what water pump was used on the 350 will determine what pump, brackets and pulleys you will need. Pics of what you have will be a help.

Re: Easiest power sterring conversion

Hey captainfab, here are some pics. The engine is a 350 from a 71 impala and I can see 2 available spots for belts I'm guessing for the power steering and air conditioning.

Re: Easiest power sterring conversion

Looks like long pump, should be easy 70's conversion. FYI, there's a factory setup for sale in the boise craigslist. I prefer the conversion, but a purist could use it, $150.

Re: Easiest power sterring conversion

I installed the power steering kit from CPP. It only took a couple hours, and supplied everything you need.

The only recomendation i have is to not use the power steering adapter CPP supplies, and instead use Captainfabs so you don't have to trim away the bumper bracket and make other modifications. Captainfab's is a better design.

Re: Easiest power sterring conversion

Yep, you have a long water pump. There are 2 differences in them as far as power steering pumps are concerned. One pump (I don't remember the year range, but I believe it is late 70's) has a threaded boss there on the drivers side where the PS pump mounts. The other has just a smooth bore hole. The lower bracket for that pump will have a nut welded to the back side of it. Another thing to be aware of is the different fitting styles for the hose connections. The pumps and steering boxes prior to 1980 have an SAE inverted flare fitting. After 1980 they used a metric fitting with an O-ring. The conversion goes a little easier if you have both the pump and steering box with the same fittings. The pressure fitting in the back of the pumps can be changed, but you will have to have the one you need to switch to, so you may as well switch the whole pump.....unless there is something wrong with it.

Re: Easiest power sterring conversion

I just did mine using Captains frame bracket and I don't think you can find an easier or cheaper cost way to do it. Great results.
If you have all the pieces and couple hours of ambition you will be done.
Good luck

Re: Easiest power sterring conversion

I used a frame bracket from cpp, but I would try Captain Morgan's, I mean Captain Fab's. Mine lined up a little crooked and I ended up installing a joint in the column to resolve it.

Re: Easiest power steering conversion

There is no doubt that captain fab's adapter plate is the way to go. What about the rest of the parts? Is CPP's kit the way to go or get everything seperatley online, maybe some other kits out there? I was also thinking this might be a good time to start getting some chrome parts. Any thoughts?

Re: Easiest power steering conversion

The pump, steering box, hoses and belt can be found new/rebuilt at your local auto parts store, or you can get used ones at a wrecking yard, craigslist, etc. The pump brackets and pulleys you can find at either a local wrecking yard, craigslist, or ebay. The brackets and pulleys can also be purchased new from various sources. The classifieds here on the forum is also a good source for these parts.
