Wiper motor upgrade?

I was wondering if anyone has done a wiper motor upgrade? My 86 is very slow and cant keep up with some of the rain storms here in Colorado. It doesnt rain often but when it does it is furious. I wasn't sure if a later model motor wouldn't bolt right in?

Re: Wiper motor upgrade?

I don't know about fittment of something else, but when my motor slowed wayyyy down I replaced it with a remanufactured one and checked all the linkage and pivots to make sure they were moving freely. I did find some binding so I hosed the connections with some white lithium grease in a spray can. It worked better, but still not great. I later found two body grounds that had rotted off. Replacing them did the rest of the trick, and the lights are brighter and fan blows harder now too! Seemed to be a combination of little things that added up to a big thing. Another thing I've noticed over the years, I used to think the stock size wipers left alot of windshield unwiped so I'd try and put longer blades on than the stock size (I admit I also had those killer neon double blade things in the 90's ). The bigger the blades the slower the wipe I found so I've gone back to the stock size.

I agree, a good working wiper motor, good grounds, and the proper sized wiper blades and that thing should wipe just as fast as intended and be fine.

Even in more modern cars with fast moving blades I've found the need to just pull over and wait when the rain comes down in buckets here in AZ Wipers will only do so much.
