Thumbs up 283 -700r4 starter problems

I am installing a283/700r4 in my 63. After getting two wrong flexplates from Carquest, I called Summitt this morning and ordered one from them that supposely will work. I also asked about a mini-starter and the fellow said Iwill need a block plate adaptor to use one. My question is what is that , and where would I get such a part?
Thanks

My guess is that Summit sold you a small diameter flywheel. I'd forget the mini starter and just get a standard starter for a 153-tooth flywheel from carquest.

He may of said Starter Adapter Plate, or Mounting Block. It should come with it.
My dad order one for his 283 last year and it came with it. SBC 283/TH350.
On his car he used JEGS Performance Products 10001 - JEGS Prostarter Starter

Hotrodder,

Im going to be installing the same set up, 283/700r4, in my 61. What was the exact flywheel you ordered from Summit? I had a flywheel in the shed thinking it would work....NOT lol.....

Thanks,

Re: 283 -700r4 starter problems

If you use a 153 tooth flexplate you must use the starter for a 153 tooth flexplate (12-3/4" diameter). if you use a 168 tooth flexplate, you must use the correct starter for that (14" diameter). Either flexplate should work with the 700R4 torque converter as most flexplates come with both bolt patterns in them. A 283 is going to need the '85 and earlier flexplate for the 2pc rear main seal.

Re: 283 -700r4 starter problems

does your 283 have the starter mounted to the block? your starter bolts to the bellhousing right? the 700r has no starter provision for a starter. you need this adaptor for your stock starter. no mini starters for the B/Housing setup i know of. there are some good b/h starters out there though. do a google search for chevy 265/283 starter adaptor plate. also a 168t flexplate for the adaptor plate.

61K10,

On my 283 I have three mounting holes on the passenger side, on rear of engine. This is where the starter can be mounted......The original 350 I was going to install has no holes to mount a starter. So now Im going with a
700r4 which also has no place to mount a starter.

With that said why would one need that adapter plate if the block provides a place to mount a starter? Maybe that statement was directed to someone else on thread? Maybe I misread what you wrote. Help a brother out LOL.

Thanks,
el_bole

Hotrodder,

Did you ever get the flexplate from Summit? If so did it work, fit, for you?

Thanks,

Re: 283 -700r4 starter problems

sorry i had it backwards--didn't know 283's had block mount holes. get the flexplate you want and yes a mini starter will work as long as the block holes are taped (threads in them) no adapter needed. the starter has the mounting plate built in--as pro/street pictures show. what was wrong with the flexplates from carquest?
