1963 3 speed transmission back to column

I am putting back my 63 3 speed transmission from the floor back to column and am wondering if anyone could answer the following?

1) Do I have the original transmission? The linkage on the transmission will not hook up the case number is GM9 3952645 it is a Saginaw.

2) Where can I find out what year this transmission was used? I have looked all over the net with no luck.

3)Where can I find linkage on the transmission to hook it back up?

Re: 1963 3 speed transmission back to column

I doubt it is original. Is the number you posted off the side cover of the trans? Sounds like it is - and would indicate a late 60's-to-early 80's Sag 3-speed. You'd need a casting date from somewhere else on the trans to narrow down the date.

Best, maybe only, bet on the linkage is a junkyard. I would think you'd want to look for 3-speed linkage from a 60-66, all would be close to the same.

Also, ensure you actually have a 3-on the tree column before you get started. I'm assuming the truck USED to have a 3 ott, but if it didn't, then you're kinda back to square 1 - and need a steering column also.

Re: 1963 3 speed transmission back to column

The truck was originally a 3 spd column truck, it was my first truck, I bought it when I was 15 years old in 1980 from the original owner and found it last year it went through 3 different owners and it was mostly still stock other than the 3 spd was put in the floor. The owner who did that I cannot get in touch with, he may have changed the trans at that time. All the linkage from the column is still there it is where it attaches to the trans that is set up for a floor shifter.

I will send pictures. The bad thing is that I completely rebuilt the Sag transmission and I was hoping it was original
