Door lock cylinder trouble

I got locking cylinders for my 64 C10 and they won't lock. I looked at the mechanisms and it seems to lock by two tabs on the cylinder turning and not being able to be pushed in to open the door. I put them in my door handles but they won't turn because there is no place for the tabs to turn in the handles. I got a new set of door handles from So-Cal and they assured me they would work with my locking cylinders. I tried to put them in and it's exactly the same as before. They push in to open the doors but they won't turn so they lock.

Does anyone have a picture of the inside of the handle that works with locking cylinders? I don't want to get a third set of handles only to find these don't work either.

Re: Door lock cylinder trouble

I think I heard of that too. That's why I made sure when I ordered from So-Cal to ask them if they would work and they assured me they would. What handles should I order that will work with them?

Re: Door lock cylinder trouble

I replaced both lock cylinders with aftermarket ones from lmc truck I think and they went into oem door handles.

I did have to modify (read: grind down) the shaft tabs so the key could actually turn and lock the door.

I got it to work with carefully grinding and checking, grinding and checking.

you can make it work, it just takes a little modifying.

Talk with markb. he used old locks in new handles and had to make some mods, but got them to work

Re: Door lock cylinder trouble

Thanks guys. I knew it would work by grinding down the tabs, but I was afraid it would do something bad and not work anymore.

Re: Door lock cylinder trouble

So, I'm stupid. I talked to So-Cal about the handles and they pointed me in the right direction. I thought turning the key would lock the cylinder, but I turned the key with the cylinder out of the handle and it still pushed. It works because the two shorter tabs on the end of the cylinder, when turned, no longer line up on the small round plate in the back of the handle. This keeps you from pushing the button to lock the door. My problem is that those tabs are about 1/16" too long, so I just have to grind those down and I'm good. I'll get some pictures when I actually have time to grind those down.

Re: Door lock cylinder trouble

I guess I got lucky, my replacement locks went into my stock handles with no problems.

Re: Door lock cylinder trouble

So, it looks like I have a similar problem. My locks and handles are OE and my issue is when I want to unlock & open the door, the key won't always turn. If I toggle the key back & forth, about 20 times, the key will continue to the unlock position with ease. What is causing it to bind up?
Would a locksmith understand these locks nowadays? Most are interested in selling & installing key-less entrance system with remote starting. Not for me, thank you.

Re: Door lock cylinder trouble

mine did the same thing. the key was so wore out it was the problem. try and have a new key cut and see if that helps. i took my handle off and took the lock out. there is a number on it, and with that number a locksmith can make you new keys that work like new.
