343 3/4 t 2wd axle for a 4x4
im considering changing my 87 4x4 fr. & rr. 10 bolt 373 axles for a more fuel efficient set (rear now has a little whine) i found a rear axle from an 80 2wd tag says 343 im told that the 342 fr 4x4 axle works fine with this didnt want to purchase it and not find a compatable fr. axle thanks

If you're gonna do any type of serious or even semi-serious wheeling, stay away from the 10 bolt and look for either a 14b semi-float or a full float

IF it's out of a 3/4ton truck, the spring pads should be ok. You might have issues with the rear u-joint, but a conversion joint should fix that.

You can find a 14-bolt semi-floating axle from a heavy 1500 with 6-lugs. You will need to move the spring pads.

the 3:42/3:43 will work together, but it will take a bit longer to switch into overdrive the higher ratio you go (lower number=higher ratio), so its a crap shoot as far as fuel savings. I like the 6 lug 14 bolt semi-float idea myself
