Re: Muncie or Saginaw

According to this website 3925647 is a base model Saginaw transmission from a 68-69 Camaro.

http://www.camaros.org/trans.shtml#3speed

Can’t find much else about it other than it was a baseline transmission, so not a performance model. That case may have been used in other applications, so this may not be the ultimate answer in the universe.

Also unrolling that I.D. tag on the upper left side cover bolt may provide more information.

Re: Muncie or Saginaw

All I have to go by is reputation. Saginaw transmissions whether 3 or 4 speed were known as weak, factory transmissions that were the cheapest available to include as standard equipment in commuter vehicles to keep the cost down. Muncie transmissions were considered a more expensive upgrade.

Re: Muncie or Saginaw

is this the original trans that came with the truck? and from other threads at first i thought it was a muncie but later on when i took it down some folks told me it might be the saginaw .......... i guess its ok for now as im probably keeping the 230 in there so it wont have to much power going into it but in the future if it breaks down i will get a muncie or something a bit better hopefully a 4 speed or overdrive.... also i read that the parts for these are hard to find is this true?

Re: Muncie or Saginaw

I don't think parts are that hard to obtain, I just rebuilt a Saginaw 4 speed and needed some gears and a side cover, got ti all thru Drive Line Service, I think out of Las Vegas.

Re: Muncie or Saginaw

if in fair shape it should be good behind the 230. as for a baseline trans it's just what comes in the car if not ordering a 4p or auto for more $$

I'm thinking gear lube like you would use in rear differential.

I would go with 90, hopefully it'll muffle her screams like a face in a pillow.
