a arm shaft question
i am rebuilding my front suspension after getting my frame powder coated and today i am installing my new moog upper arm shafts. they are centered and both rotate smoothly. used wheel bearing grease to lube them before assembly and torqued them down but i can move one shaft by hand and the other i can't. i can move it if i put a punch in one of the mounting holes. should both be the same or does this matter. tried to mount the shafts both ways thinkin i had one backwards but the same result. again they both move smoth. Rod.

Re: a arm shaft question
I just had mine apart while installing spindles and coils. They are the same way. Drivers side will fall when raised and the passenger side will stay in position when pushed up but moves smoothly without much force. With everything assembled I don't think it will effect handling or ride quality. Let's see what some others have to say. I'm following this one.

Re: a arm shaft question
I am doing my 72 c10 upr and lwr control arms all new parts and I can move the shafts by hand.Book says they should move freely. I would say inspect your control arms more closely. Just my 2 cents I am no expert.

Re: a arm shaft question
What book is that? New shaft bushings should be tight and NOT drop when lifted, and should be some resistance to lifting. Just my two cents from 38 years of mekanekin

The book I use is the 1972 10-30 series truck service manual chapter 3 page 9 bushing replacement.

Re: a arm shaft question
Why would you want extra friction in the suspension?

Re: a arm shaft question
I cant say for sure, I'm not an engineer. Why do ball joints and tie-rod ends feel stiff when new, and we replace them when they move freely?
My first tow truck, a 56 Chevy with straight axle front end, used to wear out king pins every few years, and no shops wanted to replace them so I learned to do them myself. Old timers who taught me all I know about wrenching always said you want that sh** tight instead of loose. I always took their word and its always got me through. To each his own, but I dont trust books as much as experience. Thanks to growing up in my dad's full service gas station back in the 60's, and paying close attention to my elders, I can proudly say when it comes to working on the older stuff, I never have a job come back on me. The new stuff, well thats a crap shoot lol |
