Compressor died :(

Well, I went to wash the 67 off Friday night, so I could head to a car show Saturday morning. Before I went to the car wash, I stopped to meet a friend and check out his newly finished truck. Well, thats when the problem started. I aired up the truck, and when the compressor started up, it sounded funny. Way louder than usual. Well I got to the wash, and it was still running. It also ran the whole way home, just a couple of miles. Its not filling the tank, and actually feels like its pumping air back out of the input. I thought it might be the check valve, so i pulled that apart and cleaned it out the best I could. It had a little rust in it, but cleaning it didn't fix the problem. Im figuring that it might be time for a rebuild.

Im running an Air Zenith OB2 compressor, and it has been on the truck for about 4 years. It ran great, and I feel like 4 years of service was pretty good. It is rebuildable, but I will not know exactly what it needs until I pull the compressor and tear it down little to see what it looks like.

Are there any board vendors on here that carry the Air Zenith compressors, or rebuild kits for them? I know I could go with an engine driven compressor, or switch to Viairs, but I honestly liked how the Air Zenith ran. It was quieter than a dual pack of Viairs, pulls less amps, and also one Air Zenith pumps more cfm than 2 Viair 444s or 480s. If I run 2 compressors, it will be 2 Air Zeniths.

I have thought of running a york, but would still want to run an electric pump just to be sure I had a backup. How hard is it to install a york on a SBC?

I would try putting a post in the vendors market asking who can get you a air zenith. If you really want onboard air i would use a kit like http://www.onboardair.com/KE-4000-K.htm Or if you want to build it yourself http://www.nwjeepn.com/onboardair.htm just skip the distribution block and run it in to your air tank.

I didn't have the skills to fabricate a braket for the york mine took a lot of searching and $. I found a york bracket off a 4x4 website (can't remember at the moment where, but if you want I can dig around old emails) that put it high on the driver side. The bad part was that I had to get a different brake master bracket to get it higher to clear the york, a high mount PS bracket so the belt would clear the frame and in my case a new PS pump & lines since the return line was hitting the block on the stocker. Given all this and the fittings/check valve/oil seperator for the york, it was pretty expensive, but at a fill time of about 2 minutes from 0-200 psi I think it was worth it...that and the fact that if it goes out another york from the yard is only $40 and an easy swap.

I put a schreader valve on my tank incase something happens instead of plumbing and wiring in an electric one...mainly just to keep it cleaner.
