How to buy a Blazer? (Talk the wife into it!)

I have wanted a 1st gen truck for over a decade. I started looking for a 4wd and found them to be few and far between. Then I found some Blazers for sale. Well that was 2 years ago and I still have neither. I am currently trying to talk the wife into one that's listed for 2500 but needs and exhaust and fuel pickup. (has plastic replacement tank) We can here it run (350/350) but she wants to drive it first. I used to work on everything and rebuilt wreck cars, but that was 6 years ago. I want it for a daily driver. (5-6 miles per day) I read all the rebuilds and know that I can do all the work. One catch I don't have a garage. Any Ideas would help. Thanks.
It has typical rust that she hates. Where can I get a cheap tailgate? She hates the tailgate!

i had to sell my 84 k10 to get my blazer. the 84 could only seat 3, there are 4 of us....the wife was the one that got left behind so she went for the blazer idea rather easily.

That is such a classic line! I have used it many times!
I'm kind of spoiled. As long as I'm not blowin' the bill money, I buy whatever I want, and the wife doesn't give me any grief. (It wasn't always that way)

Re: How to buy a Blazer? (Talk the wife into it!)

I bought a 71 Blazer ten days ago and the wife is still really mad. She claims:

1) I spent way, way too much.
2) We didn't discuss it first.
3) I won't drive it enough.
4) Her friends think it's ugly.

She's right on the first three points, what can I say she's smarter than me. She's wrong on the 4th point, her friends are dummies who wanted me to buy something like a Porsche. When I was a kid I always thought I wanted a little foreign sports car, but now I have no desire. I can't account for my taste in cars, but I tend to go for nostalgia. My second car was a 1979 Caprice Classic, and I almost bought one three weeks ago, before I found the Blazer. Watch out if I ever find my first car again, a 1977 Celica.

I knew I couldn't get permission or forgiveness, but I got it anyway. I figure an occasional blow-out argument is good for the marriage, kind of like a forest fire it cleans out all the dead underbrush, then you can have a fresh start.

Trust me a Porsche isn't any cheaper.

Re: How to buy a Blazer? (Talk the wife into it!)

A decent 77 Celica is hard to find nowdays ,I also have been looking for one to replace one I had long ago. Probably the best car I ever owned and I sold it for more than I paid for it and drove it many years .Nice Blazers are easy to find if you have deep pockets which I dont ,good luck on your searches .

Re: How to buy a Blazer? (Talk the wife into it!)

Keep lookin'. Blazers have a "season" and more come for sale in the spring and summer than the other half of the year.

Also, it's usually cheaper to ship than it is to fix rust.

There were approx 80,000 Blazers produced from 69-72. If you consider how many have met their demise in one way or another, how many are fully restored and how many just aren't for sale (like mine), there are not a whole lot left so it may take some time to find the right one.

As for the wife, they are great family and friends cars. My wife and kids love my truck. On sunny days my kids always want to go for a ride in bouncytruck.

Re: How to buy a Blazer? (Talk the wife into it!)

If you dont think women understand what is so cool about a full convertable 4x4, try convincing them a caprice or impala is cool. I wouldnt know where to go within 100 miles to find a european car dealer around here. Tell her how cheap they are to maintain and it will last another 40 years. Maby show her some pictures of different ones with the roofs on and off and see what she likes as opposed to her saying no no no. And dont forget to mention that its not seasonal like a boat or sled

I involved my wife in the discussion part, we've had 7 blazers, so she liked playing in the dunes, camping, etc. (My harley a totally different story) I've been building our cars since we were engaged (married 18yrs now). As long as the bills get their share, I'll sell something to get something, and it's not hers, it's a go. Replacing it with a bbc was the challenge. It had a blown bbc in it so the cost of redoing it to a sbc with the exhaust, mounts, sbc, and other odds/ends, she said go ahead keep the bbc. Her only issue is that it's too high. Give and take.

Total truth here!

I just bought a new blazer on saturday without telling my wife. She was pissed for like 10 mins, and then got over it, because she's been bugging me to get to work on our Blazer project.

Along those same lines, I think every boat I've ever bought as been either A) Without my wife's knowledge, or B) When she is out of town.

Hopefully somoene can, but it might be good road trip for you and the wife. With this old of a truck, buying sight unseen is scary to me unless you're buying a prestine $20K ride.

Yup, now I know where to sell mine if I ever want to get rid of it, although the Pigeon Forge rod run is usually a good place, too.
