Exactly What Parts do I need for a Posi Swap?
I want to put a posi in my truck's 12 bolt rear. It has factory 4.11 gears, so I assume it's a Series 4 carrier, but I would like to change it down to a Series 3, so I can go with a 3.73 gear.
What parts do I need? I assume Eaton Posi, 3.73 Gears, and exatly what else? Thanks! |

An installation kit (bearings, shims, crush sleeve, seals...) and a professional installer.
You looking at around $800.

They do make 3.73 gears for a series 4 carrier so not having to change that out. This would save you some money.

Tis true, I just assumed he wanted a new carrier since he listed and Eaton (limited slip) Posi.
You "could" get a Lock-rite or another "locker" that goes into an open diff, BUT you still need it to be setup professionally.

Best kit to get would be this one. This is a deluxe kit with bearings. This is everything you need other than brake pads etc. to rebuild your rear end. This is the one I'm going to also get when I get ready for my gear swap. You then need to decide what gear manufacturer to go with. Everyone has they're favorites and they're bad ones. On the posi/locker you need to look at both and decide which you want. There are good/bad points to each.
Posi- Gives you traction to both wheels only when you need it. Eaton is rebuildable if you need to later on. Costs less than a locker. These are only to be installed by the professional. They can break with right amount of power/abuse after time. Locker- These are more geared towards 4x4 trucks but have also started on street scene. These are very tough and dependable. they can be installed with only hand tools and you can do it yourself with no professional required. These very rarely break and are all solid componets. No springs etc like posi has. You have both tires spinning all at the same time unless turning. Bad sides are that they are a bit more than posi. You can get a locker that unlocks when turning but you hear a clicking sound from the rear. But then engages to lock back. It acts like a spool but inlocks when it needs to. The choice is yours of course to decide. You might look at Randy's Ring and Pinion here http://www.ring-pinion.com/ for more info. He's one of the guru's of this stuff. Plus he has great prices like Summit does. Also look at http://www.powertrax.com along with http://www.eatonposi.com/ for all the info on each to decide for yourself.
