Heater box/Evaporator box refinishing
Ideas and pics for heater box refinishing please. I think I will just prime and paint it when I get my truck painted in a few weeks.

I just did mine... new heater core, new gaskets, etc. Check the heater resistor while you have it out, it's easier to get at.
I wound up sanding the scratches out of it and painting it with Eastwood Underhood Black. Here's a tip: the heater core is held in by two thick wire supports that bolt in. My core was an aftermarket replacement that didn't fit tightly, so I slit a piece of fuel line lengthwise and slid it over those wires before boltiong it all back in. This held it in place without any movement and should prevent a lot of rattles in the future.

I had a broken heat box in my 70, I fixed the crack with fiberglass then sprayed it with a texture spray made by Plasticoat, it looks like bed liner but a little more coarse. I then sprayed it satin black. No pics but it really looked nice. I used the same stuff on the interior heater box on my 69 and 72. In the past I have coated similar items with a heavy coat of paint then dusted the wet paint with sand then another coat of paint. It really works well.

In both of my restorations, I took the box out and when no one was home gave it a scrub in the bath tub
 . After drying it I purchased some cast blast or similar cast iron colored paint (it is actually pretty close to the original finish on the box) sprayed the box , replaced the evap cores, used stainless screws to bolt back together new gaskets etc.

They came unfinished stock. I just sanded mine down to fresh material and the painted it w/ semi-gloss clear, looks correct and brand new.
