the 250 or 292 will fit, just about any year with HEI.

The major differences in years are some had the coil built into the top of cap and some had a coil mounted on the side of the engine on the side cover bolts.

I have the built in coil model on mine

You can find new ones on E-bayfor less than 80 bucks[I have no connection with any of them] Also make sure the wire that feeds it is 12v keyed on

Beautiful motor Sigshooter. That coil on top cleans the block up nice.

Re: HEI for 65 230

Opt for a used HEI from the 230 with integral intake manifold cast into the head, the HEI with the remote coil, they work the best, are the easiest to find, and, they ain't an offshore disaster. The coil in the cap HEI's for these engines have the same problems, issues and failure causes as the same type for the V8 types. As an absolutely last resort, put the points and condenser back in the stock distributor, and avoid the real problems PerTronix Ignitors cause.

Thanks.....

I have ran this dist. for about 20 years and today I finally had to put a coil in it, not bad considering it was all used when I put it in 20 years ago!

I highly recommend the stock GM HEI, they are easy to find and very dependable. I have about a dozen I have put back over the years...... I got one today at the scrap yard as a matter of fact, that is the one I took the coil out of for mine today.... I went to leave work this evening and it just cranked, so I started with the coil since it was the easiest and vvvvrrmmm it started.

We hauled in a 75 chevy truck with a freshly rebuilt 250 ( block and head were still bare cast not even painted yet ) that the guy sold the truck for scrap. Since the Boss HATES 6 cylinders I was able to pull it and buy it for scrap price before we crushed it today.

My Job can be rough at times but I do get alot of cool $#!+ for next to nothing!!!
