that light you have i think is the fiber optic light that puts light to your steering column shift indicator to tell what gear you are in.

Thanks fro the tip! I am not sure how to get this back into the column. The column is out of a van and has issues. Ed

here is picture i have that shows it . the lightbulb end is mounted to the instrument cluster the other end goes to the indicator.

Well tomorrow is the big day. I am dropping off the GMC 72 at my wrench's shop for metal work. New rockers, cab corners and various fills of holes. I bought $1000 worth of parts this week and will be glad to see some of it on the truck. Meanwhile, I will be in Italy for 16 days bicycling and eating good food. See ya round!
