Brakes and tires questions
I just purchased a 97 gmc 2wd, 1/2ton. High mileage. My brake light is on steady red. I step on the e-brake and the light stays the same brightness. How do i adjust the e-brake? When i turn left or right my turn signal also clicks rapidly. Does this happen for any other reason besides a burnt out light?
What pressure should the tires be aired up at? Thanks

Re: Brakes and tires questions
There should be 2 brake lights on the dash, one for the parking brake. On when applied off when disengaged .
The other for low brake fluid or imbalance in the brake hydraulic system. Requires filling and bleeding the system. May be caused buy a leaking wheel cylinder or master cylinder. Have the entire brake system inspected. Check the door sticker for tire pressure. Turn on the 4 way flashers and walk around the truck check all the lights. |

Re: Brakes and tires questions
Thanks for the help. I had just changed the brakes and drum on the driver side (adjuster was seized, springs were rusted, pad was cracked and drum was rusty). The other side looks like the PO had recently changed. I did bleed all 4 brakes after but the light did not go away. When i apply the e-brake the truck is able to move on it's own. Plus, the light does not go away when i release the ebrake. How do i tighten up the brakes?

Re: Brakes and tires questions
With the rear brakes adjusted, follow the PB Cable forward and you'll find a threaded portion this is where you adjust the cable.
Have the pb released, adjust the cable until you can get the pb to hold with the pb pedal. WD 40 will help this process. To put the brake warning light out, slightly crack (so it mimics a slight leak) the front bleeder on one wheel and lightly push the brake pedal till the light goes out. What your trying to do is center the warning light switch. You may have to repeat this on the rear to get the light out. Last edited by G&R's57GMC; 06-24-2012 at 09:58 PM. |
