So why did it drop so far!!!

First off, This is my first lowering experience. So... Yesterday, I installed Mcgaughy's 2.5" drop spindles with 2" drop coils and all new tie-rod ends and ball joints. (I ordered everything from Porterbuilt with a great experience.)

I first measured the truck at the top of the fender well and it measured 31.25" and after the install the same point now measure 25". I absolutely love how low it looks but was figuring only for a 4.5"-5" drop and not 6.25".

Does anyone have any thought how my math does not add up? Will the front raise up after I install my CPP c-notch and axle flip? I'm a bit confused.

Thanks in advance for any comments and tips on my situation.

Re: So why did it drop so far!!!

It looks worse because rear is so high.
Once back comes down, front bumper will raise.
Just a distorted view right now.

Re: So why did it drop so far!!!

Maybe those drop coils thought they were supporting a small block instead of that V-6.

Re: So why did it drop so far!!!

That is likely the answer. I’ve read the small block Chevy weighs 550-575 pounds. The GMC V6 weighs around 850 pounds, or close to 300 pounds (55%) more.

Re: So why did it drop so far!!!

My dad overhauled a V/6 for my friend and I tell you the pistons are big. My dad worked a GMC dealership and he said that GMC stopped making them due to they would last forever and they ate a lot of gas.

I would say a 6 speed trans would correct that problem of eating so much gas along with high gears on the rearend. Here is something that some of you guys might not know older GMC trucks had more heavy duty rearends the reason why I know is some old parts man that now is dead tried crossing over some rearend parts from a chevy truck and they wouldn't work he said GMC were made more HD im just saying what he told me.

Re: So why did it drop so far!!!

I appreciate the comments guys!

I have finally made time to drop the a$$ end to match the front. I have never attempted suspension mods this difficult, but with the help of some great friends and a few cervezas... anything can be done.

I installed CPP's Heavy Duty C-Notch which seem much more difficult than it turned out. I did go the extra mile and welded all mating edges to help secure some rigidity.

I also flipped the axle and welded on new larger Moser axle perches.

You were right Grumpy... dropping the rear over 7" ended up raising the front 1".

I took a some time and sanded the cab down to get ready for some new paint. Overall... I am thoroughly digging my new stance.

To my knowledge most if not all of the GMC's came with leafs in the rear and coils up front.

Re: So why did it drop so far!!!

Great job on the flip kit.
The Moser axle perches are very similar to the early Camaro leaf spring perches.
I would get rid of the the bolts holding the "sandwich plate" to the bottom of the spring perch.
A set of u-bolts around the axle tube, would be a MUCH safer solution.

Thanks for the tip. I def want this best to be safe and rigid as all hell. I used all Grade 8 Hardware with a 3/16" cold rolled steel plate. Would this in theory not be stronger than u-bolts.

I did relocate the existing shock mounts backwards 1.25" from original location. I have not road tested more than a mile since the drop. I'm waiting for this heat wave to pass (somewhat) so I can paint the cab.
