70 Chevy Van
I picked this thing up a couple months ago and have been messing with it on and off. It's been setting untouched since 99. It's kinda got a cool story, a friend/customer of ours bought it from the original owners back in the early 80's and drove it daily until he got another van in 99. Through the years it's been in our shop from time to time. I actually went to take a look at another vehicle and it was just setting there asking me to buy her, made an offer and two days later she was at her new home! Now for the cool part, the local news paper here at the time had purchased two vans new in 1970, one a v8 and the other a straight six, to deliver papers out of. Well the owner of the news paper at that time was my moms uncle so it made a small circle and has ended back up in the family to stay this time! Sorry for the long read, now on to details. It's the 71 body style but actually a 1970 year model. Still has the 5 on 4 3/4 lug pattern instead of the 5 on 5 like the 71. It's got a 250 straight six and a 3-spd, only option it was ordered with is a passenger front seat. When I brought it home it still had the factory dog dishes but I robbed them for my blazer before I thought to take pics!

Re: 70 Chevy Van
Today is the first time I've actually driven it on the main road, runs and drives great! New tires and a set of original 60's one piece mags that were supposed to go on the wife's 57 but the van got done first! That may be cause I'm a little self centered but i don't think so!! I'm not really happy with the rear being a little high but I'm planning on hauling a trials dirt bike in it so it's gonna squat some plus the tank is pretty empty so I'll just wait n see.

Re: 70 Chevy Van
Cut two rounds out on the front but if i had it to do over I would've only cut one. Two put it resting on the the mount for the bump stop with the bump stop removed. I ended up putting two coil risers per side and cut about an inch off the cross member where the a frame bottoms if the the stop doesn't do it's job. I removed all but two leaves (the main and next one to it) in the rear. My plans are to flip the rear and notch the uni body but I wanted to get it down quick and easy to make sure it's gonna do okay as far as the drive train goes. I plan to eventually bag it when I get some other projects knocked out.

Re: 70 Chevy Van
That is cool kind of makes me miss my 96 safari with 234k on it. We got rid of it when the head cracked on it was a great van though. It never left us stranded. It's odd it has windows even though it only has one option. I learned a lot on that van. I still see it around occasionally.

Re: 70 Chevy Van
Good looking old van.
Been looking for a mid 70's van lately but can't find one around here. The wife is about to have a fit though. I grew up around the van craze so it hasn't got out of my blood yet. Who remembers ACTION VANS in Muscle Shoals, Ala. from the late 70's to late 80's? Didn't mean to hijack . |
