292 flexplate info.
looking to change from 292 with 4 speed granny to 292 with th350 auto trans, what flexplate will i need to do the swap. i have a 1985 flex plate from a th 350
trans that was behind a 305 v 8 , but have heard it wont work.....can anyone help me on this..... |

Count the teeth on your current flexplate that was used on your 292 and that should tell you which one to buy. 153 or 168. Can only be 1 of the 2. They cost $25 at truck shop in Orange,ca.

The 292 from about 67 up had larger mounting holes than the early models & the other engines. You can drill thev holes in the flexplate out to 1/2 in. & get bolts for the 292 flexplate.

I have been going through this very thing lately and this is what I know: if you need a 168 tooth with a 10.5" torque converter pattern-they don't exist. I finally had to get a dual pattern flex plate and ream the crank holes to 1/2 inch (from 7/16") and add 2 more alignment pin holes. I did this today on my friends mill, because he has a turn-table with degree marks so it was super easy to get it right. I am happy to report that my newly modified flex plate is mounted and if I knew how much to torque the bolts, I'd put in my trans.

thanks to all.....this was the kind of info i was needing...not sure how many teeth my flywheel has but i will try and find out before i start the tear down. the flex plate i have i can count the teeth on it.... and see what size the torque converter is....would rather have the info. before i start...instead of diggin up a bunch of snakes half way into the project....thanks again and if anyone else has an idea please let me know.....

How are your starter arraigned? Mine are straight across from each other, instead of on a diagonal like most all others. I never could find the right starter nose in the junkyards, so I had to buy one from a starter shop ($20 or so) and the starter company had to order it and it took a week to get it, so I had them go ahead and build me a starter. This bolts-straight-across nose seems to be the reason you have to use a 168 flex plate (168's are 14" across, and the 153's are more like 13" or a little less).
This picture, you can see how my starter is bolted on. I'm not a very good picture editor, but the heavy black line is about how the outer bolt is, and the little arrow is the inner bolt.  I can take a better picture if you need.

pritch: the pics are great.....the more info i can get the easier it will be on me, i have not checked my starter bolt up yet but i need to check that out also...
thanks for the info.....this is my first inline six project, i like the 292 but its alot different that the v-8 stuff.....love the pics... |
