Problem with my steering Column
I recently rebuilt my steering column in my '67 c10, and now my column shift doesnt work worth a damn. When i shift, it seems to be binding up inside, and the whole shifter collar rotates off the bearing inside. Any advice? anyone had similar problems?

Re: Problem with my steering Column
Subscribed. I am about to tear into my column this weekend and I'm very interested to see what's wrong with yours.

Re: Problem with my steering Column
So after much research, I have decided that I forgot to include my lower bearings. I have the spring and washer, but didn't see a bearing when tearing it apart. So, 40$ to classic heartbeat and out comes the column again.

Re: Problem with my steering Column
kev2809,
Below are the pictures of where this bearing goes. In my case, there is no "race" or any ball bearings left, where they should be inside the ring. See the original picture for the spring and washer. What I am working with is a 67 non-tilt automatic column shift. HOWEVER, in your case, I think your problem might be in your upper bearing, where the collar attaches to the "turn signal switch support." The firewall-side of the support piece is machined to match the groove pattern on the upper collar. If it's not lined up right, the whole thing will spin without doing much of anything. Now, if you have a tilt column, I have no idea. Of course, any help from the more experienced members would be GREATLY appreciated... |

Re: Problem with my steering Column
OK ok, confusion, what I have in my ride is from a '71, auto non-tilt. That's the one I painted and put back together minus my brain housing group.
The '67 orange column is from my rusted-out cab, strictly for reference. |

Re: Problem with my steering Column
ok, i actually do have that bearing, i just didnt know it was called that! lol
i pulled that bottom collar off my column, and my shifter actually works, but it seems like it depresses that bearing to far and i the holes wont line up for the collar to put back on. i know if i put it back on the way i had it, the shift lever wont pull in far enough to shift...weird
