Question 97 Power steering pump R&R

I searched and didnt find anything. I need to replace the P/S pump on my truck. I have another pump but I need a pulley remover to get the old one out. Is there a special remover/installer for this pulley ? Thanks in advance

Yes there is. I can't remember where I got mine but yes there is ps pump puller/installer. And the pump is kinda awkward when taking it off the block. There's this bolt in the rear that's a pain.

You can rent a pulley remover from autozone.

Re: 97 Power steering pump R&R

I bought my pulley remover/installer set from Northern Tools for around $25, it'll work on selected P/S and alternator pulleys. Harbor has several sets available also, and some parts chains rent them. I just replaced the pump on my 93 Yukon, still having trouble with a slow leak between the pump and reservoir. If I do it again I'll get the pump and reservoir as an assembly.

Re: 97 Power steering pump R&R

I always use the free rental at Autozone or O'Reilley's. No need to spend money on Harbor Freight junk that might or might not work when you can use a decent one for free.
I use a lot of Harbor Freight stuff, but most of their pullers, etc. have poor quality metal and want to strip out if you don't keep everything greased up. I tear a LOT of engines down, I buy their balancer pullers for under $10 when they put 'em on sale. Got a $hitload of the extra bolts that I've never used since I reuse the same ones over and over again.

That said, I don't think GM engineers could have made removing the power steering pump much harder if they tried!
