I just started a frame off restore on a 71 short bed 4x4. I want to disassemble the entire frame, by removing all rivots. this would allow me to blast all hidden areas. Has any one out there done this. If So, Any suggestions if its a good idea or bad idea. I intend to bolt the frame back together with grade 8 stainless bolts.

Use lock tight on all the bolts and hope they don't come loose. That ride might get interesting.

stainless bolts = you truck flying apart, drill all holes out to the next larger size as the bolts will be thinner than the rivet bodies, use fine thread bolts with lock nut.(crush type)

I sure wouldnt remove anything that is riveted on.......

X2, Rivets and bolts don't just interchange under shear loads. Grade, type, size, and material are all factors. If this is foreign to you, then your best bet would be to check the bare frame X,Y and Z axis. True and repair as needed then blast and prime it.

Its got some pretty bad rust,in a couple areas. those parts are gonna have to be replaced. I suppose I could just replace those parts. using grade 8 steel bolts with lock washers and loc-tite. I just know theres rust behind those riveted parts, that the blaster cant get to. Thanks For Your opinions

hey 70cst Thanks for the warm welcome. I made a rookie mistake. didnt take any pictures before starting the tear down. I have taken many Since Then. Will have to get the wife involved as I am computer stupid.
