Need help with 58 rearend, bearings?

I wanted to install new brakes all around my 58 Apache project and came across a problem in the rear. When I removed the wheel (pass side) there was gear oil everywhere. Then I noticed the axle was really loose, like the bearing is completely gone. Does anyone have a diagram of all the parts used in the rearend of this truck? It's a regular non posi rear, factory original. Also, who sells the parts, asked at autozone today and they have no listing for bearings.

Re: Need help with 58 rearend, bearings?

I'd try a Napa or an old independent part house that still has the paper catalogs on a rack above the parts counter.

someone is going to have to chime in here because I don't know if that is a C clip rear end or if the bearing retainer holds the axle in.

Is there a large hole in the flange on the axle beween two lug bolts that you can put a socket through to reach the bolts that hold the backing plate on. And does it look like there is a flange bolted to the front of the backing plate?
I've got a 55 rear axle at the house but have never had the brake drums off and it's been too long since I worked on one to remember.

If it is 3100 with a stock rear axle this should be the seal. http://www.napaonline.com/Catalog/Ca...695_0121701481

It looks like it has a C clip axle which mean that you will have to pull the cover, take the bolt out that holds the spyder pin and take the pin out and then push the axle in so the clip comes out then pull the axle out.

Re: Need help with 58 rearend, bearings?

I'm going to take it apart tomorrow, does anyone know what the stock rearend is called? It has the round cover non posi rearend. Autozones app shows three different rears and three different bearings/seals
Thanks

I think the seals match the bearings so if you can get a seal out without tearing it up you should be able to use it as a sample.

Most all of the major truck parts houses carry them. You can switch to modern bearings also, i think they all carry those as well. Brothers, lmc, ecklers, classics parts, impalla bobs. I have had good experience buying from classic parts. They seem to ship the quickest.
Locally your probably looking at napa. Unless you have good mom n pop parts place thats use to hotrodders.

Re: Need help with 58 rearend, bearings?

I bought the front updated roller bearing kit. The rear bearings are what I'm looking for. Does the rearend have a model number that I can go by?

If its a 1/2 ton it will have the C clip type axles. You will need a manual with instucktions to remove the axles.

Re: Need help with 58 rearend, bearings?

The rearends in the 55-59 were 55T.

Do you have a service manual for your truck? Well worth the investment.

A couple of places I would suggest contacting.

www.yukongear.com www.ringpinion.com

LMC truck list the bearings and seals http://www.lmctruck.com/icatalog/CA/full.aspx?page=85

When I did mine on my 59 about 10 years ago I took the seal and bearing out and went to a comercial bearing house in an industrial area and then were able to get me bearings and seals.

Re: Need help with 58 rearend, bearings?

Took it apart today and its bad, the pass side bearing is gond and the outer edge of the tube is damaged. The axle took a beating too. Anyone have a good axle for sale?

Re: Need help with 58 rearend, bearings?

FYI the only place who had them was classic industries
Have to wait till i get them in hand, the guy kept saying 58 only had posi? And that calls for a different bearing. I told him i was sure this truck was non posi ( round cover) we'll see..

Re: Need help with 58 rearend, bearings?

I would replace the differential with a 12 bolt.

Re: Need help with 58 rearend, bearings?

Update, got the bearings and seals from classic industries and they fit great. Also the seal was a lot cheaper than others. $5 vs. $26.
Trying to keep this truck stock so no 12 bolt on this one. I am thinking of hot rodding my next truck and will be interested in updating suspension, engine, etc. this one will be an old mans truck driven only on weekends lol
