Rear brakes 72 C-30 tech tips?

Hey all.
I am going to replace the shoes on a 72 C-30. Never had one or worked on one before. Does anyone have any technical tips or things to watch out for when doing these? Maybe there is even a section in here on it??
Well, before I dig in I thought I would ask if I need any specific tools and so on.
Thanks in advance!
Tim

What size brakes are they, mine are 13x3 and hard to find shoes for!!! Only do one side at a time so you can see how it goes back together.

Re: Rear brakes 72 C-30 tech tips?

Assuming your C30 is same as (or similar to) a C20, there are a few pics in this thread http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=443837 that might help. Do one side at a time so you can refer to the other side.... remember the adjusters are mirror image and must go back on the correct side.... and if one shoe is longer than the other, it goes to the rear of the truck. Also, if the lining material is two different colors, the darker color goes towards the rear.

A brake tool like this will make the job a lot easier.

one at a time is a good idea as posted above - I've found that cheap insurance is to have a digital camera handy and take 203 pics during disassembly. Working side to side (mirror images) can be confusing (for me)... Digitial pics will show you exactly "how it looked" before you started. (and I do still only do one side at a time).

Re: Rear brakes 72 C-30 tech tips?

The brakes on a C/30 are the same old same old as far as how they're put together. If you've done other trucks,or even cars, you'll find it pretty straight forward. I find, for whatever reason, many seem to get the e-brake re-assembled bass ackwards and they don't work. So,pay attention to that. Twice,I've had someone do the brakes on a K/20 and a C/30 and both times the e-brake didn't work. I took it apart and found the obvious problem. This was two different people,so not sure why but pay attention to the other side and you'll be fine.
