88 tbi completely floods out, gas in oil, injectors run not spray
Ok so first up just put in a new CTS or coolant temp sensor thinking that was it.
Well i guess not. truck floods out completely, gas in my oil, smells like gas in it, overfilled by an inch on the dipstick. oil is thin as well because of it. It's brand new oil I just put in. No miles, maybe 5-10 mins run time on it, was not overfilled before. awhile back when I got it back together and running(had sheetmetal off underhod for paint) one time it idled very fast and was unusual, did this after the battery had drained and I charged it up, then after that one time it was back to normal. Then just out of the blue I go to fire it up, fires for a second and dies, then I have to floor the pedal to fire it and then it doesn't fire right off. It sputs and coughs and trys and trys, puffing smoke out the pipes smelling of raw gas but after maybe 30 seconds or a minute of holding the pedal down and it doing this it fires and runs, trys to smooth out, then when idleing it starts loading up it seems and when I rev it runs horrible. I shut it down, won't refire, same deal have to floor it. Next day, fires right up, check the injectors, they are pulsing you can feel the spirts of fuel coming out of them, but it's not a nice cone spray it's running like huge drops or pouring like but not solid stream. I put in the CTS, unhooked the battery, tried it, same spray from them. I did it again letting it stay unhooked for about 10-15 minutes, still the same. my o2 is new and plugged in, my map and esc is also plugged in and I have no clue what is causing this and why just all of a sudden. My gas in the tank is old and very low so would it be something got in the system to cause this? I'm thinking of a complete tbi clean and rebuild, drop tank, clean, flush the lines and new filter. I don't want to do it and it not cure this though, I already wasted $30, 15 in oil and 15 in a new CTS. Right now money is very tight.

I would put a filter on it and put some better gas in it first off. Check the grounds that are on the water neck to make sure they are ok.

grounds have been moved they are back further on the intake and should be fine. I installed a new crimp fitting on them and bolted them down to the intake.
my filter is new, and gets gas thru it fine, but I aint sure on putting anything else in the tank if this crap is old and bad and may cause issues.

injectors are not leaking when the engine isn't running. I cycled them on and off thru the key no cranking and had no drips at all.

Only drip at an idle, correct?
Can get a jumper wire from neg side of battery to the grounds that you moved and start it and see if that helps, just a thought. Its missing something somewhere, the ground comes from the computer to fire the injectors and you may track wires down and check them out. Last edited by scotts62; 07-07-2012 at 07:00 PM. |

Re: 88 tbi completely floods out, gas in oil, injectors run not spray
fuel pressure is at 12 psi, when running at the filter.
the injectors are definately dribbling or dripping at idle and not spraying, maybe they are just dirty?

They should spray not drip. There are little screen filters on each injector. Check them for crud or varnish.

Re: 88 tbi completely floods out, gas in oil, injectors run not spray
exactly what I thought on their screens but correct me if I'm wrong the injector must come out to remove the screen right? if so I'm going to wait because I'm afraid I may damage or lose an o-ring, and I know I can buy them only, may do that, but may just clean and rebuild the entire thing.

Re: 88 tbi completely floods out, gas in oil, injectors run not spray
While you may have a screen problem in the injectors, that's not causing the crankcase to fill up. Clogging does not cause flooding. I suspect your FPR has a leak. Common for both TBI and Vortecs. Perhaps a restricted fuel injector caused the pressure to spike and rupture the FPR. But a clogged injector in and of itself does cause crankcase dilution. Neither does a clogged fuel filter.

Re: 88 tbi completely floods out, gas in oil, injectors run not spray
I just ordered a new fuel pump strainer and filter from rockauto, going to get a tbi rebuild kit soon i hope, tear it down and clean it all.
As for crankcase filling, the oil is definately overfilled, by an inch or so, and it smells of gas to me, yet it doesn't light with a lighter lol. I still don't trust it going to change it out.

Re: 88 tbi completely floods out, gas in oil, injectors run not spray
I'm going to but I need gaskets and maybe the new fpr so why do it before I have the parts or could afford them?
plus you have to remove the pod to get at it and such and it has gaskets. not to mention triple digit heat with high humidity. when I said I had bought a filter and strainer that wasn't meant to be because that's what I'm going to try, just meant to I got em cheap so I ordered them to have, going to install laster for sure to try and avoid any debris anywhere.

Re: 88 tbi completely floods out, gas in oil, injectors run not spray
tb is now torn apart.
I tried the ground wire trick, right to the battery and hooked to every ground i moved, did nothing. So i tore it apart. the FPR MAY, and I say MAY, not positive, could have been leaking. I couldn't tell on the outside but looking at the diaphram showed it being wet all the way to the outside on one part. I say no holes or tears but it was wet. I also say this part in the middle.. ![]() it was wet, smelled of gas, looks like oil but that rear tube from the valve cover to the tbi collar has been gone for months on my truck or maybe even a year or more now I think. I noticed it appears to have a passage way right into the injector bores as well as if spilling fuel over into them? my injector screens look dirty as well, so it looks like a full rebuild and attempt to clean my injectors. Now tho I don't have the extra coin so I have to wait to order my rebuild kit.
