extra gas tanks

Are the side saddle type of tanks safe? side impact crash, etc. thanks

GM installed them stock on the 73-up trucks and they were sued because of some bad accidents. NHTSA never made them recall them, though. I think they're inherently more dangerous than tanks between the frame rails, but then I don't think having a tank full of gas behind my seat is such a great idea, either.
