305ci V8 questions???

I have the orginial 305 in my 82 lwb gmc sierra, and was wondering if anyone has done anything to their 305's that gave them more power??? I hear alot of people that rebuild the 350 or swap the 305 for a 350 to race like quarter mile. Are our 305's worth the quarter mile to put money in them and beef them up???

Re: 305ci V8 questions???

When it comes to the 305 gearing can really help or hinder. Throw in a 3:73 rear and it will accelerate much quicker. with 2:73 acceleration is nothing.

i figure that the rear end gearing could also help to change. Im thinking about getting posi lock for it, would this cause me to have to buy new axels or rear end???

They are build codes for the trucks found on your build sheet. under the seat usually.

Re: 305ci V8 questions???

Gotta love 1 tire fire. you would know if you had posi. you can feel it when you turn and both tire spin at the same rate. also your turning turns from 6 lanes and the shoulder to earths orbit

I think i got the rpos right
regular prduction order
no prob turning because of the rear ,short wheel base too

one wheel wonders, had to get the guys out and lift the back to get the 250 to spin (72 Ventura)lol

and i think the pumpkin (rear end) had a number (looking front to back)on the right side tube

Re: 305ci V8 questions???

For the Posi You need to identify your rear spline count and what type it is(10,12,14 bolt etc) I've heard good things about e lockers. they can be turn on and off on demand. As for a rear end i personally would just buy a complete one that still has tight tolerances. for the ratio it's based on preference. 3:42's are good for everyday. If you have overdrive 3:73 is liveable. The Lower the gear the more acceleration but also higher rpms at speed.

ok ill look at it in the morning and get back to you! i want something that just locks up both wheels so they both spin.

Re: 305ci V8 questions???

what i was warned about is that the locker can spin you sideways easier
the one wheel "loose" keeps you more centered or "on the road, not across it" lol

Re: 305ci V8 questions???

think of a skid steer how you have one wheel braked so that you can turn. wet conditions it can get sketchy.

Re: 305ci V8 questions???

I still have my old 305 sitting in the garage. Cant bring myself to part with. It was originally in my old boat. Yes you can build them up to have fun but if you are serious about going fast you need more cubes. What the 305 can provide is reasonable fuel mileage if you build it right-google is your friend.
