Cheap brake cyl.

I replaced one rear brake cyl today. The old one was leaking. The rubber boots on each end of the cyl. were rotted away. The brake fluid ate them up. I have done a lot of brake jobs, and have never seen that before. I could not find a brake cyl. that was made in the USA. I got a Wagner brand made by Federal Mogul. It was made in China.

Yeah, you are going to be hard pressed to find parts like that made in the states. I am a big fan of rebuilding my wheel cylinders for about $3.80 each (cost of new cups and boots).

Re: Cheap brake cyl.

I paid $9.00 for the cyl. I would rather pay $40.00 for one that is made in the USA that will last 10 to 15 years.

Re: Cheap brake cyl.

Im glad there is still people like that are willing to pay the extra dollar to have things made in america. I only buy it if it says made in USA. I just redid my entire drum assembly on the rear, and i was very impress that the wagner brake pads, springs and even the drum itself was made in the USA. All my balljoints for the front axle and all the bearings were also made in the usa. Im a loyal Federal Mogul customer after seeing all that. And im sure that even more could be manufactured in the U.S. if more people actually cared and didnt search for the cheapest deal... if only they realized that buying all the cheap parts is going to cost them more in the end.

Yeah I agree 100% I wish it was easier to find parts in the USA but nothing is anymore, I was just looking at the box for a transmission filter I just bought and it says made in Taiwan which is Duralast, and my fuel pump which is Airtex made in Mexico.

Re: Cheap brake cyl.

I adjusted my rear drum brakes to day and noticed cast on the drums it said ''Made in Argentina" Made me laugh. Also found out that there is no inspection/brake adjustment slot in the backing plate of a 12 bolt ? Had to adjust them from inside the drum.

The drum may have an area that you can knock out. Then put a plug in it. That is what I did.

Re: Cheap brake cyl.

The brake drum Has a knock out in it you say?....I don't think these drums are original so I may be out of luck. I got the job done and I'm happy with the adjustment. Next time I will inspect the drum a little bit more.

My drums are not original . Look real hard. You may see a shape of a slot. I found them. I hit it real hard with a large hammer and a large chisel. I hit it on both sides. It popped right out. Good luck.
