Look what I found as a parts truck

I found this 72 Cheyenne Custom Camper with Tilt A/C 402 (210 HP) and the Cowl Induction Hood, its in decent work truck shape but, I want to us it as a parts truck for my 69 GMC

Can I rebuild this low (HP 210) 402 motor into a decent street motor or is it the bottom end torque motor used in mobile homes, what would it take to make this a decent street motors and if so what type of combo needed to make a good runner.

I know Im gonna get flame for parting this decent truck but I really want to build that 69 GMC with the 3 on the tree into something nice

What do yall think?

The 402 is simply a 396 bored out. Nothing special or unspecial about it the core of it when they put it into a truck. If they made Camaros and Chevelles go fast they will make a 69 GMC go fast. Build it up and buy an extra set of rear tires.

The Tilt, and 402 (maybe the 400 tranny) Motor, Cowl Hood and a few other parts Im gonna keep for my 69 GMC that's reason I bought the truck and wont start parting it till my truck is done.

I didnt intend for this to be a PARTING TRUCK post I was mainly looking for info about the 402 motor and would it be good for a good aggressive street motor


I got the truck in a trade for project 70 Nova and 2200 cash we both got what we wanted. I had 2 Novas an 70 and a 71 im keeping the 71 its in nicer shape.


Any ideals on what can be done as a aggressive street motor. I built a mild 396/325 hp before that I was happy with, but my thinking is since im starting out with a Low HP motors there may be more work and parts to order, any help would be appreciated

It is just that, the low hp torque motor with truck heads, it can be brought to life, its just how much $$ do you want to throw at it. Since I am going through a 402 build I will share what my engine builder and I talked about. First thing he told me was he would rather see me rebuild a 454 bottom end then the 402. The pistons will cost you the same as will the block work and there is no replacement for displacement. if you get a short block complete you might be able to reuse the crank and rods on the 454, thus keeping your rebuild even with a 402, also its a 2 bolt main block, so depending on how crazy of a street truck your looking at might be something to think about. The stock heads are probably going to need overhauled. at least all the valve seats ground out and replaced. there is probably 6-800 for basic rebuild. at 150k miles my springs were so toast you could compress them quiet a bit by hand. and had valves with 8-10thousands slop in them. I invested closer to 1800 into mine and had them opened up and enlarged for use on the 496 mine turned into. It all depends on what you want to do. Do you have a BB in your current project? I'm just thinking about torque and how that 3 speed is going to hold up. also what rear end are you running. Going bigger in one area for me at least always finds the weaker link elsewhere. I'm not trying to discourage you. because I am the first one to go Big or go Home. Just sharing how my head rebuild turned into a stroker, roller motor and a lot more cash later.

So just bump up the cam, new intake, pistons, carb and headers and I should be good then right

Im thinking around the 350 to 400 HP range, streetable but not radical, im not going to the track or anything, also I can take my time on the build to get the right combination, and better price on parts, I want it to run just as good as my 396/325 mild build or maybe a little better (aggressive)

I was told that the Tach is an aftermarket type that fits in the dash cluster pretty good. I thought it really was an OEM unit it , until I was told that it wasnt, it also has a clock in it and it does look pretty good like its supposed to be there.

It looks like it had a Camaro tach conversion. This is exactly what I'm looking for to pull a camper.

I had a 402 motor in my "street" car 71 chevelle back a long time ago, like the 90's and it ran in the 1/8 mile a 6.78@120 showing it needed way more gear because of the mph is way high for the et. The car weighted 3760 with me in it and it had a powerglide [that slowed it some as well cause the car was so heavy] there was another tenth in it with a th 400 in the car so the lower low gear could hekp it move. [it went 1.29-131 60ft time] often carring the front wheels chest high! so you can make a 402 run pretty good!!! and that motor still had the factory heads on it Jim
