Dealer installed Warn winch on '71 GMC?
Hey All,
New dude here. My name is Karl, from Roswell, NM. Before you ask: Yes, that Roswell. Yes, it did happen. Yes, but only one. No, New Mexico is in the United States. :-) Ok, with that out of the way, I recently bought a fairly decent 1971 GMC K1500 that I plan on being my last truck as I much prefer the older trucks to newer. The guy I bought it from bought it from the original owner, who special ordered it from his dealer in Las Cruces, NM and upon arrival had the dealer install a Warn 8000lb winch. I'm not sure of all of this, so thought maybe you guys that are more familiar might recognize the winch setup as dealer installed or just some shop after the fact. From what I can tell the winch is early '70s. Also, as you can see I'm missing the front right outside trim and also the trim around the right rear tail light if anyone might have one, missing clips too. Please let me know if you happen to have a decent spare. Thanks much! |

Welcome.Great looking truck.Check the classifieds boards for the trim you need. You can subscribe the BB for $25 and post a WTB(want to buy) if you like. Also, there is a listing linked from the home page for vendors. Most should have reproductions for those pieces.
As far as Roswell.Yes they landed Only one trip, they faked all the moon landings from the one film session. And Yes,I do own a foil beanie.

Re: Dealer installed Warn winch on '71 GMC?
IMO dealer installed vs aftermarket isn't really an issue at all. For most people factory installed is very important, anything after that isn't a huge deal.
That being said these are old pickups. There are some rare and valuable models but for the most part you can do dang near anything to these trucks without harming their value greatly. If you remove the bumper and winch you will not harm the value of the truck. You can certainly sell the winch and bumper if you remove it, I am not trying to tell you it's worthless.

Re: Dealer installed Warn winch on '71 GMC?
Hello. Welcome to the site and welcome to America...oh right,NEW Mexico . That's part of Spain, right? ...aw jeez.
Anyway, without receipts you won't know who installed the winch. And,as said before, there's really no difference between dealer installed or anyone else installing it. Warn sold the winch and an installation kit which the bumper was part of. If you had the original invoice it might show the winch was purchased as part of the original sale. Even then,it's possible a dealer could have a local truck upfitter do the installation and the dealer would upcharge on that. For special truck equipment,GM had what was called "The Silver Book". There would be wrecker, dump, cargo, etc bodies, snow plows, ambulance, camper equipment,StepVan-type bodies, school bus,4wd conversions for larger trucks, and on and on. The original owner could have ordered the truck with the winch through that program with the winch included in the original invoice.
