600HP BBC Budget Build

Do it. Ignore the fuel system and build the rest. Tell me what you'd do. One day I'd like to put it in a 81-87 C30 Reg cab just for the hell of it.

Car Craft already did it and made 707 Hp for $6700. It could probably done for cheaper than that too.

Re: 600HP BBC Budget Build

Re: 600HP BBC Budget Build

Here's what I did - and if it doesn't hit 600hp, it will at least scare it, and I tried to be budget conscious in choosing parts which is usually not in my nature...

Ported Edelbrock #61459 Marine heads (used off eBay for $1000), I had them flow benched so I could order a custom cam - 331 cfm intake/250 cfm ex @ .600" lift. chambers cc'd @ 109. Heads came with slightly used Crower springs, Comp pushrods, & Crane aluminum roller rockers and ARP head bolts.

Traded some parts for a used 870cfm Holley street avenger.

New Edelbrock RPM air-gap intake & Victor Series water pump from Summit

.060" over 2 bolt '78 3/4 ton chevy truck 454 block (I already had the motor)
Stock steel crank, .010/.010, resized stock rods ARP studs in block, ARP bolts in the rods. Decked block, set pistons .005" in the hole.

SRP forged small dome pistons, 10.8:1 compression with .039" head gasket.
(spent a little extra for nice forged pistons)

Custom ground hyd roller cam by Chris Straub, 245*/248* @ .050", .646" lift (spent some money for a nice cam/lifters/custom pushrods)

Cloyes Hex-A-Just Billet double roller timing set & matching Cloyes Quick Button timing cover.

DUI custom curved distributor & DUI LiveWires plug wires.

Nice! About how much did that hit your wallet?

And guys, I basically mean the cheapest way to hit 600hp.

Re: 600HP BBC Budget Build

Bosshogg's setup looks pretty solid.

I hope to crank my son's truck this weekend and it won't be quite that strong but very solid on a budget. 781 open chamber oval ports over a stock type closed chamber dome. I am not a big fan of a hyd cam but it came with the motor. It has a performer rpm cam, lifters and intake with a 650 double pumper. Backed up with a built turbo 400 and a narrowed 9 inch.

Re: 600HP BBC Budget Build

Mine was just a tick over $6k, with the machine work and assembly. Had I just gotten it machined and screwed it together myself, I could've save a couple hundred bucks, but I don't claim to be an engine builder and didn't care to experiment on this one. I'm sure it can be done for cheaper, but I wanted a custom roller cam to really take advantage of the heads and get a really wide powerband.

Re: 600HP BBC Budget Build

Yes, i have a 707hp AFR headed 496. Pump gas 9.9 CR, small hyd roller... Was under $9000 when I bought it. The AFR heads up the price quite a bit over the cast heads. I have yet to install mine, but I can already guarantee I will be a return customer!

Re: 600HP BBC Budget Build

thirdstreettito - check out www.chevelles.com in the 'performance' section. 'Vortecpro' is Mark Jones over there (same person 69GMC910 ordered his motor from). Tons of positive feedback on his engines there. Also lots of other good Big Block advice on combos, parts and what not.
