Tailgate customizing

Anyone ever put speed holes in their tailgate? If so how did you lay out the angle we have on the top outer face of the tailgate?

What do you mean by speed holes Bud?
Like in the video below or just drilling holes in the tailgate?

Re: Tailgate customizing

with the stampings on the tailgate, I think it would look a bit strange. Speed holes have a place, but on the tailgate imo they would just look like someone took a hole saw to your truck.

Re: Tailgate customizing

No Paint (Extreme Powerdercoatings build) has given me a whole new appreciation for speed holes. His grill and tailgate are awesome.

Re: Tailgate customizing

MythBusters found that you get better fuel economy with the tailgate up.
Less drag.

The mythbusters episode was rather interesting.
They put a truck in a wind tunnel and watched the movement of air. The one with the tailgate down had more drag. The air gets sucked down and 'drags' across more surface area. Which results in worse fuel economy.
The one with the tailgate up actually caused a wind circulation within the bed, creating less drag.
The wind just glided over the wind bubble created within the bed.
We've all seen this happen when we had some leaves or paper in the back of our trucks. The debris just floats around - circulating in the back of our truck.

Re: Tailgate customizing

Very interesting. They've been selling those mesh tailgates for years to folks and now mythbusters says they are worthless. Thats funny. I always ride w/my tailgate up anyway, but that is interesting. I would have bet that with the tailgate down would have been better. Learn something new everyday.

Re: Tailgate customizing

I hear you guys. No worries about fuel mileage. I just wanted to change up the tailgate with something different. Kinda like Jimmy Dean's pic but more along the top part. Plus I can put my fishing rods through them and keep them from sliding around. I think fuel mileage worries are a waste of time. If you own a truck or a hot rod and worry about fuel mileage you're kinda going backwards, but anyway if I get around to it I'll post up some pics. Just thinking about doing some metal work and changing things around a little bit.
