72 big block towers

Why were they different? and one year only? Was the frame crossmember different?

I did read this again.

Re: 72 big block towers

I would search for the '72 only frame stands.
(the engine mounts are cheaper for this style frame stand)
The 68-71 style frame stand will also work on your 72.

I'm not sure why GM decided to change the 68-71 style mount for the 1972 model year,... and then to change them again when the 1973 model trucks came out.

Check out the classifieds.
There is usually a set on there for sale.

Re: 72 big block towers

I got $95 for my last set of 68-71 style frame stands + shipping.
The ones for sale on the board are cheap at $80 shipped.
Those rubber engine mounts are expen$ive for that style BB frame stands.

Re: 72 big block towers

I always use small block rubbers on the 68-71 BBC mount stands. I did an FAQ some years ago showing the details with pictures if you can find it. A set of small block rubbers is under 20 bucks or so and they fit fine.

Have you had any problems with the motor mounts breaking? One of my old trucks would go through them like nobodies business. Swapped them out again with the original style 68-71 mounts and problem was solved. Small block mounts are much weaker. (ancor brand) WES

Re: 72 big block towers

Wes,

I never had any issue with tearing them up, but I will admit I am not a worst case scenario either. I never beat on my trucks.

Re: 72 big block towers

Me I never roast the tires.. I also use to haul a lot of scrap out to the wrecking yard, and that gave me issues too. WES

THis is just my opinion, but if you will remember, GM had a lot of problems with the "biscuit" style motor mounts of 67-71 breaking, binding up the steering, and issued a recall which consisted of a steel cable that held the engine in place in case of mount failure. I would suppose that since the big block has more torque, and probably more failure, only it was changed to the clamshell mount. It also seems to me that after 73, there is only one frmae stnad, not small or big block specific, but I might be wrong there.
