rear end

I recently bought a 66 k10, since it had been sitting for a few yrs before I bought it. I decided to change the fluid in the diff's. Come to find out the rear end is shot. I am thinking about ordering parts from LMC Any other better options out there?

Re: rear end

If your needing a gear set and master rebuild kit I would do a search for drive line shops. I used one that sells on ebay to order my carrier and gears and had a local guy build it for me. I didn't go thru ebay just contacted the shop direct. Very knowledgeable. I don't recall their name, it's some where in my build. They are in TX.

Re: rear end

If you can't find the parts you need locally, I would go directly to the differential parts suppliers.

Here's a couple that have a good reputation.....

http://www.ringpinion.com/

http://www.drivetrainspecialists.com/

http://www.reiderracing.com/

http://www.tomsdifferentials.com/

The parts can also be found at Summit Racing and Jegs

Just so you know, the GM truck 12 bolt was used from '63-'79 in the 4x4's and thru '82 in the 2wd's.

Re: rear end

I bought my ring and pinion (Richmond) and installation kit from Jegs and an Eaton posi unit and 2 new axles from Summit and had it set up locally.

I just bought all the parts to rebuild the rear end in my 66 k10. Any advice about doing it myself?

Re: rear end

Jegs and Summit should have DVDs on the subject. You need a few special tools which they have as well. But since i havent set any up before, in thinking the most important part is getting the gears to mesh in the proper pattern. I have read that the pinion crush sleeve can only be used once. If you do it yourself, get a dvd and a few extra crush sleeves and an assortment of shims. And prussian blue to get the mesh pattern correct. And find a freind that has done it before, lol.

Re: rear end

That depends on what you're looking for and how much $$. Moser makes a nice rear cover with a built in girdle, but it isn't cheap. I believe Summit has some finned aluminum covers for the truck 12 bolt.

Re: rear end

I spent way more than I wanted to on the rebuild parts. I am trying to get a descent priced diff cover. You think I can get away with just a chrome steel job? How much of a difference would a nicer cover make?

Re: rear end

An aftermarket differential cover is not going to make any difference in the operation of the differential. If funds are a little short, I would just put the stock cover back on for now, and apply what funds you have towards getting the differential assembled correctly. Changing the cover later on is very simple.

Re: rear end

That makes sense, besides I need to save up some cash so I can get one of your power steering adapter plates for my 66 k10 long bed. Maybe in the spring, I really broke the bank good with this rear end rebuild..

Re: rear end

The whole rear end is out every bearing the whole nine yds. Any tips, tricks or hints before I start the install, I am very new to this? I have a 12 bolt with 3.73's. Thanks in advance.

Re: rear end

I am doing the disassembly and prep for reassembly. I will have all the parts ready. A machinist from a local race shop is doing it as a side job.

Re: rear end

The rearend is done it went pretty well, it pays to have someone from a local shop help you if you are really getting in to replacing major parts.
